Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men’s Soccer Ties No. 19 Rutgers-Newark

Ewing, N.J. –  The Gettysburg College men's soccer team battled a hard-fought 19th-ranked Rutgers University-Newark squad to a 0-0 double-overtime non-conference tilt on a wet and rainy Sunday afternoon in the finale of the 2018 TCNJ Men's Soccer Classic.

Junior Precious Ozoh (Abuja, Nigeria/Holderness School (N.H.)) and junior Ezekiel Omosanya (Lagos, Nigeria/Northfield Mount Hermon (Mass.)) were both named to the all-tournament team.

The last time that the Bullets finished in a scoreless double-overtime match was in 2015 at then ranked No. 11 Messiah College.

Despite the weather conditions, the Bullets had great ball movement throughout the entire match and played extremely well against a ranked opponent. At one time during the match, Gettysburg played with five freshmen on the field.

Gettysburg attacked the net early on in the first-half as freshman
Oladayo Thomas (Larchmont, N.Y./The Masters) took the corner kick and set up a scoring opportunity for freshman Connor Fife (Newtown, Pa./Holy Ghost Prep) as he headed the ball towards the net, but the Rutgers-Newark's goalkeeper made the save. Moments later, the Bullets were hoping to collect a goal as Ozoh took back-to-back corner kicks, but the squad was unable to connect. Ozoh had a couple of great shot opportunities in the first half that nearly missed the frame.

Halfway through the second-half, Fife drilled a shot that looked promising for Gettysburg, but the Scarlet Raiders goalkeeper made a crucial save. Since neither team was able to capitalize on their shot opportunities in regulation, the game headed into overtime.

In the first overtime, the Bullets played down one player the final eight minutes due to a red card that occurred two minutes into the period. Because of the red card, Gettysburg had to continue playing down one player in the second overtime period as well.

Freshman goalkeeper
Dillon Konzelmann (New Providence, N.J./New Providence) made his presence known in his first college start as he made a huge save for the Bullets with under two minutes to go in the first overtime period.

Gettysburg (1-2-1) outshot the Scarlet Raiders 18-9, including 17-5 in regulation, but Rutgers-Newark outshot the Bullets 4-1 in the overtime periods. The Orange and Blue also held the slight edge in corner kicks 8-6.

The Bullets play their Centennial Conference opener on Saturday as they welcome Washington College to Clark Field at 7 p.m.
