Men’s Lacrosse Marches Into CC Final

Bullets to Meet Winner of Franklin & Marshall/Swarthmore

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Gettysburg outscored Dickinson 8-4 in the first half, then put the game out of reach with a 5-0 run to open the second stanza as the second-seeded and 19th-ranked Bullets downed the third-seeded and 14th-ranked Red Devils 13-6 in the Centennial Conference (CC) semifinals Wednesday afternoon at Shirk Field at Musselman Stadium.
 
With the win, the Bullets (11-5) advance to the Centennial Conference championship game for the third year in a row and the 14th time in program history. Gettysburg, which won its fifth game in a row, will take on the winner of the other semifinal between 12th-ranked and top-seeded Franklin & Marshall and fourth-seeded Swarthmore, who were playing Wednesday night.
 
A balanced offensive attack did the trick for Gettysburg, as eight players figured into the scoring column. Sophomore Jack Harvey (New Providence, N.J./New Providence) led the way with three goals and one assist while classmate Blake Gray (Reisterstown, Md./McDonogh School) added two goals and two assists. Sophomores Andrew Garstka (Springfield, Va./Paul VI Catholic) and Tommy Heller (Livingston, N.J./Livingston) contributed two goals apiece.
 
Defensively, junior Tim Brady (Charlotte, N.C./Providence) made nine saves and picked up four ground balls while freshman defenseman Mitch Wykoff (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Ludlowe) added four ground balls and a caused turnover.
 
Dylan Maher and Brodie Phillips scored two goals apiece for Dickinson (12-4) while Andrew Jones made five saves.
 
The Red Devils jumped to an early 2-0 lead, with Phillips and Maher scoring once apiece inside the opening five minutes. But the Bullets owned the rest of the quarter, ending the period on a 4-0 run. Harvey scored twice during the spurt while Heller and Garstka each tallied once.
 
Maher pulled the visitors to within a goal when he scored with 13:29 left in the opening half. But that's when Gettysburg reeled off another 4-0 run to open up an 8-3 advantage. Four different Bullets scored during the stretch, starting with freshman Brian Kolen (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) who was followed by Heller, Gray, and freshman Michael McCormick (Lorton, Va./Paul VI Catholic).
 
Philips stopped the bleeding for Dickinson when he scored with 1:12 showing, cutting the deficit to four at the intermission.
 
Gettysburg started the second half a man-up and Harvey made it count, scoring 30 seconds into the Dickinson slashing penalty from the end of the first half. Sophomore Will DeMartin (Summit, N.J./Saint Peter's Prep) got into the act when he scored with 11:57 showing as the Bullets' advantage swelled to 10-4.
 
Neither side scored again until Garstka cashed in on anther Gettysburg EMO. Gray capped the quarter when he scored with 3:23 left, making it a 12-4 game heading into the final quarter.
 
Senior Sean Fumai (Weston, Conn./Weston) capped the Bullets' scoring when he struck with 12:53 left in the game. John Lockwood and Alex Hosker scored once apiece in the last five minutes for Dickinson to set the final score.
 
Dickinson finished with advantages in shots (34-26) and ground balls (25-24).
