Stanich Collects 100th Win; No. 19 Wrestling Goes 3-1 at Waynesburg Duals

WAYNESBURG, Pa. (December 8, 2018)  – Junior Troy Stanich won four matches, two by fall and two by technical fall, to earn the 100th victory of his career and lead No. 19 Stevens Institute of Technology wrestling to three victories Saturday at the Waynesburg Duals to close out the fall semester.

Junior Dylan Van Sickell and freshman Michael Dooley also earned four wins, and sophomore Brett Kaliner and senior Joey Borai, along with freshman Robert Gennat, each added three, for the Ducks, who defeated Apprentice School, Thomas More University and the hosting Yellow Jackets to improve their dual record to 5-3. Stevens' lone setback of the day was a 31-14 decision to No. 8 Baldwin Wallace University.

The event was a homecoming of sorts for assistant coach Anthony Bonaventura, who competed for Waynesburg and was the program's first-ever NCAA finalist in 2014.

"We will go anywhere in the country to see the toughest competition," Bonaventura said. "It was a long trip, but we made the most of it [in] getting four quality duals."

"We knew coming into the weekend that we would be short-handed at a few weights, but the guys battled and were scoring points," Bonaventura continued. "It was a nice way to finish the semester and we continue to see improvements throughout the entire lineup."

Stevens opened the day with a 37-15 victory over the Apprentice School. The Ducks claimed seven of the 10 bouts to secure the dual victory. In each of Stevens' dual victories on the afternoon, the Ducks earned wins of seven of the 10 weight classes.

The Builders got on the board first with a major at 125. Junior Joey Borai evened the score with a major of his own at 133, defeating Kolin Johnson by a 10-1 margin for his fourth win of the year. Stevens took command of the dual with three straight pins, with sophomore Brett Kaliner pinning William Heaith in the opening stanza.

Apprentice slowed the Stevens run with a technical fall at 165, before the Ducks reeled off three straight wins to clinch the victory. Freshman Robert Gennat pinned Jeremy Mosley at 174 to open the run and sophomore Colin Myles pinned August White at 197 to close it out. The pin was Myles' first of the season. In between, Dooley won via a 10-3 decision over William Sorey for his eighth win of the year.

Apprentice earned a forfeit at 285 to provide the final margin.

In the most anticipated dual of the day, No. 8 Baldwin Wallace earned falls in three of the final four weight classes to pull away from the Ducks.

The Yellow Jackets opened competition with a major decision at 125 and a decision win at 133, before Stanich earned a third-period fall over Tanner McHugh at 141 to put the Ducks on the board.

Kaliner dropped a competitive one-point decision (6-5) to No. 4 Stanley Bleich at 149, before Van Sickell won a 13-2 major over Nick Sbrocco at 157 to even the dual score at 10. Kaliner previously defeated Sbrocco via a technical fall at 141 in last week's New Standard Invitational.

Richie Burke and No. 2 Anthony Arroyo won via fall at 165 and 174, respectively, to give Baldwin Wallace a 22-10 advantage before Dooley won his second bout of the day with a major over Nick Franks at 184. The Hillsborough, New Jersey native spun a 9-0 shutout to trim the margin to 22-14, before No. 3 Zach Lehman pinned sophomore Bruce Parola at 184 and James Ritche won a decision over Myles at 285 to thwart Stevens' attempt to even the dual.

The Ducks rebounded from their lone setback of the day to defeat Thomas More, 36-16, again earning victories in seven of the 10 weight classes to win their fourth dual of the year.

Jimmy Murphy opened the competition with a 15-5 major over senior Michael Heck, before Borai won a technical fall over Kenny Byers to put Stevens in front for good. The Toms River, New Jersey native was leading 20-5 in the final period at the time of the stoppage.

Stanich and Kaliner followed with consecutive technical falls to put the Ducks ahead 15-4. Stanich was leading Gavin Foushee 21-1 at time of the second-period stoppage and Kaliner was ahead of Cody Roland 21-5. Stanich's victory was the Roxbury, New Jersey native's 100th career win.

"It's an impressive milestone to reach at any point of your career," Bonaventura said of Stanich's accomplishment. "To do it in the first semester of your junior year is a testament to Troy's hard work and consistency since he stepped onto campus."

"It's cool to look back and see how far I've come since I started," Stanich added. "Even though it's not what I train for, it's another stepping stone that I'm grateful for reaching."

Van Sickell picked up his second fall of the day, pinning Garren Moody in the opening period. The Little Silver, New Jersey native finished the day with three pins, two of which took place in the first three minutes of competition.

Jimmy Traub picked up a pin at 165 to put up six points for Thomas More, but Stevens earned victories in each of the next three weight classes to secure the dual. Dooley defeated Avery Jones via an 11-4 decision 184 and Gennat and Myles won by forfeit to push Stevens' lead to 36-10. Tyler Kassinger won by fall at 285 to provide the final margin.

In the final matchup of the day, affectionately dubbed the "Bonaventura Bowl" because each program has a Bonaventura brother on the coaching staff, Stevens won each of the first five weight classes to pull away from Waynesburg en route to a 31-13 victory.

Freshman Akhil Vega earned his first victory of the day with a 10-4 decision over Dylan Williams at 125 to open the scoring. Borai and Stanich followed with consecutive technical falls to give Stevens a 13-0 lead. Borai was leading Dylan Winters 17-0 in the first period at the time of the stoppage and Stanich was ahead of Josh Kuslock 22-5 in the final period when the bout was halted.

Kaliner wrapped up his day with his second fall of the afternoon, pinning Matt Lascola in the opening period. Van Sickell followed with an opening-stanza pin of Jaeden Gordon to give the Ducks a commanding 25-0 lead.

Zach Mackall won a major at 165 to put Waynesburg on the board, but Gennat and Dooley won decisions at 174 and 184 to clinch the dual. Gennat defeated Dan Verhovsek 11-9, while Dooley completed his perfect day with a 4-1 triumph over Adam Rigney.

Ken Burns won by decision at 197 and No. 1 Jake Evans took a forfeit win at 285 to close out the afternoon.

With a 5-3 dual record thus far, the Ducks have finished the fall semester with a .500 or better dual record in each of the last six seasons.
