Pete Luther and
Kevin Hagan scored two goals apiece to lead the Muhlenberg men's soccer team to a 5-1 home win against Moravian.
The Mules (4-5-2) snapped their seven-match winless streak in a big way, netting a season high in goals. Last year, Muhlenberg stopped a nine-match skid by defeating the Greyhounds, kicking off a five-match unbeaten stretch.
All five of the Mules' goals came off set pieces - two free kicks, two throwins and a corner kick. Luther
(pictured above) began the barrage of goals just 1:36 into the game when he knocked in a corner kick from senior
Kevin Irving for his first goal of the season.
Less than three minutes later, freshman
Stephen Carton drew a foul near the corner, and this time Luther headed in Irving's free kick with 4:45 on the clock to complete his second career multiple-goal game.
It was the first time since a 1996 contest against Swarthmore that Muhlenberg scored two goals in the first five minutes of a game. Luther is the first Mule player in at least the last 25 years to accomplish that feat.
Muhlenberg extended its lead to 3-0 with a little help at the 12:36 mark, when a long throw by sophomore
Cameron Miller was headed in by a Moravian defender.
The Greyhounds (6-4-2), who are in first place in the Landmark Conference, spoiled the shutout 14 minutes into the second half. The Mules answered back quickly, though, with Hagan putting in a free kick from just outside the box less than two minutes later.
Hagan finished his first career multiple-goal game shortly thereafter by putting in a long throw from senior
Kiefer Cundy that went off the head of Miller and was redirected by freshman
Stephen Carton.
Luther and Hagan are the first pair of Mule teammates to score at least two goals in the same game since 2014.
Junior
Raymond Leto made four saves, including two at point blank range early in the second half, to earn his first win as a Mule.
