Stevenson Topples Field Hockey

Bullets drop non-conference contest 3-0

OWINGS MILLS, Md.The Gettysburg College field hockey team dropped a non-conference decision at Stevenson University 3-0 on Tuesday night.

Gettysburg (5-3) suffered its second consecutive loss and its first shutout setback of the season. Stevenson (4-5) ended a four-game losing skid with the win.

Both offenses were on the attack early, forcing Bullet keeper Jillian Caputo (Haddon Township, N.J./Haddon Township) and Mustang goalie Kelsey Eure to each make a pair of saves in the opening 12:21. The hosts struck in the 14th minute as Sara McVey dribbled the ball down the field and then made a leaping hit over a diving Caputo to knock the ball into the cage.

Eure kept Gettysburg off the board with five saves in the first half. Meanwhile, McVey padded the lead with a back-handed slap following a pass from Brooke Morris at 28:27.

Gettysburg, which held a 20-11 lead in shots and a 9-3 edge in penalty corners, pressed the attack in the final period. From the 48th minute to the 55th minute, the Bullets racked up four corners and seven shots. The visitors came up empty as Eure posted five more stops on her way to a game-high 12 saves.

McVey completed her hat trick with her third goal in the 58th minute.

Caputo finished with six saves. Junior Julia Soares (Barrington, R.I./Barrington) led Gettysburg with five shots, while sophomore Emma Bertrando (West Chester, Pa./Henderson) and freshman Henna Fraiman (Lutherville, Md./Roland Park Country) each took three shots.

Gettysburg resumes its Centennial Conference schedule at Bryn Mawr College this Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
