The Muhlenberg wrestling team scored a landmark Centennial Conference victory, coming from behind to defeat Ursinus, 24-20.
The Bears are the flagship program in the CC, with 11 championships in the first 24 years of the league's history. They finished first or second at the CC Championships 13 of the last 14 times they participated in the tournament.
Muhlenberg trailed 20-17 through the first eight bouts before taking a 21-20 lead on a major decision by junior
Gennaro Cerminara at 197. That made the heavyweight bout the decisive contest in the match.
Mule sophomore
Scott Schaeffer trailed 3-1 before landing a takedown in the second period. He rode his opponent out for the rest of the period to take a 1:46 riding time advantage into the final stanza.
Schaeffer was taken down early in the third period, but escaped to tie the match at 5-5. Still with a big edge in riding time, he kept his Ursinus opponent at bay the rest of the way to pull out the 6-5 decision.
Muhlenberg trailed 11-0 after two bouts but got back-to-back major decisions from sophomores
Austin Sherman at 141 and
Josh Hickey (pictured above) at 149. After an Ursinus decision at 157, sophomore
Dylan Schwartz needed just 70 seconds to pin his opponent and tie the match at 14-all. It was the team-leading 27th win of the season for Schwartz, but just his third pin.
Junior
Jimmy Fratantoni followed with a key 7-3 win at 174 against the 2017 CC 184-pound runner-up.
