The Muhlenberg track and field teams competed at three different meets over three days with a limited squad, as only 16 members competed on the holiday weekend.
Â
Despite the small number of participants, the Mules had some big performances.
Â
Leading the way was senior
Jaryd Flank, who placed fifth in the steeplechase at the Bucknell Outdoor Classic. His time of 9:10.53 was better than any previously recorded in Division III this season. The mark also qualified Flank for the IC4A Championships.
Â
Two Mules – senior
Michelle Gaykowski and junior
Anthony Calantoni – won their events at Moravian's Greyhound Invitational.
Â
Gaykowski took first place in the discus for the third time this season, throwing 139-9 (four inches off her own school record). She was only in seventh place after the trials but uncorked her winning throw in the first round of finals to beat five Division I competitors who qualified for the finals.
Â
Calantoni finished first in a field of 28 runners in the 800, running 1:55.36 to defeat a Division I runner by more than three-tenths of a second.
Â
In addition to Gaykowski, three others throwers posted ECAC-qualifying distances – juniors
Alex Mitton (pictured above left) in the javelin,
Michael Havkins in the discus and
Jess Voltaggio in the javelin. Voltaggio improved on her second-best all-time mark.
Â
Junior
Jamie PacilioÂ
(pictured above right), running at Bucknell, lowered her personal best in the 5000 by more than 12 seconds to an ECAC-qualifying 17:36.07.
Â
Freshman
Alison Stouffer competed in her first-ever heptathlon at Kutztown's Mondschein Multi.
Â
The 16 Muhlenberg athletes combined for 13 new or improved Centennial Conference qualifiers.
