Roberts Homers Three Times, Bridge Has Walk-Off Hit

SWARTHMORE, Pa.--Swarthmore College Baseball compiled five home runs in a 13-12 walk-off win over Ursinus College on Tuesday.

Junior Jackson Roberts hit three home runs, becoming the first Swarthmore player to do that in a game since Mike Cameron '12 in 2009. Roberts now has four homers this season and leads the Centennial Conference with a .421 batting average and a .674 slugging percentage.

Against the Bears (9-14-1 overall, 4-6-1), the Garnet (22-7, 9-2) were down two going into the bottom of the ninth. A bases-loaded single by Swarthmore sophomore AJ Liu tied it, and an RBI single from sophomore Holden Bridge scored senior Matt Palmer as the game-winning run.

Sixth-year head coach Matt Midkiff has tied his career high in single-season wins at Swarthmore.

Trailing 2-0 in the bottom of the first, junior Charlie Levitt hit his conference-best eighth home run of the season to tie the game.

Freshman Coleson Hebble hit his fourth dinger of the season in the third, giving the Garnet a 4-3 lead.

Swarthmore scored at least one run in each of the first six innings. In the bottom of the sixth, sophomore Cole Beeker cleared the bases with a three-run double deep into the right-field gap. However, Ursinus scored six runs in the top of that inning so Swarthmore still trailed 11-10.

To keep the Garnet within striking distance, sophomore closer Jack Corkery retired all three batters he faced in the ninth. The Centennial leader with five saves hasn't allowed a hit or a run in his last eight appearances, all of which were one inning. His ERA is 2.61, and he has 12 strikeouts in 10 innings. He picked up his first win of the season on Tuesday, bringing his record to 1-1.

Liu, Levitt, Roberts, Hebble and junior Connor Elliott all had a multi-hit game as Swarthmore had 17 hits.

The Garnet remain in first place in the conference, holding the tie-breaker of run differential with Johns Hopkins University. Before playing at the Bears on Friday, Swarthmore has a non-conference game set up with Desales University in Center Valley, Pa., Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.
