No. 14 Tartans Win Tight 5-4 Match with No. 33 Swarthmore

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – The 14th-ranked Carnegie Mellon University men's tennis team hosted 33rd-ranked Swarthmore College on Saturday, February 15 for an in-region match at the Oxford Athletic Club in Wexford, Pennsylvania. The Tartans rallied after doubles for a 5-4 victory to move to 3-1 for the season.

Swarthmore held a 2-1 lead after doubles play with the point for the Tartans coming at third doubles by junior Ray Boppana (Boxborough, Mass. / Acton Boxborough Regional) and senior Robert Levin (Virginia Beach, Va. / Princess Anne) by an 8-3 score.

The Tartans took a 4-2 lead after winning at first, second and third singles. Sophomore Sam Gibson (Chico, Calif. / Pleasant Valley) finished first with a 6-1, 6-3 victory at third singles before Boppana took at 6-3, 6-2 win at first singles. Levin won the fourth point with a 6-3, 7-5 win at second singles.

Swarthmore then won at fourth and fifth singles to knot the score at 4-all.

Freshman Jonathan Nottingham (Philadelphia, Pa. / Masterman High School) clinched the match at sixth singles with a three-set comeback win, 5-7, 6-3, 7-5.

The Tartans will next face 26th-ranked Denison University on a neutral court in Youngstown, Ohio, on Sunday, February 16 at 1:00 p.m.
