Game Recap: Baseball |

#7 Swarthmore Sweeps Previously Undefeated Stockton

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - No. 7-ranked Swarthmore College Baseball comfortably defeated Stockton in back-to-back seven-inning games on Saturday by scores of 13-0 and 19-4.

The Garnet have won 10 of their last 11 as they've climbed to an 11-3 record this season.

GAME 1: Swarthmore 13, Stockton 0

Junior pitcher Jack Corkery did not allow Swarthmore's hitting to overshadow his complete-game four-hit shutout. Corkery has won both of his starts this season, including one against No. 1-ranked Wooster. He was a first-team All-Centennial Conference closer in 2018, but this year he already has 14 strikeouts, just two earned runs and eight hits allowed in 13 innings as a starter.

Swarthmore took several free bases to load them in the first inning, and sophomore Michael Sepe drove in the game's initial run on a sacrifice fly, but the Garnet didn't pull away until late in this one.

Junior Jared Gillen and senior Charles Levitt singled in runs in the fourth, and a bases-clearing double by sophomore Sam Jacobson plated three more in the fifth.

The game was all but over when freshman Austin Burgess' sent the first pitch he saw as a player at Clothier Field well over the fence in left field. His first college home run gave the Garnet a 9-0 lead in the sixth inning.

Swarthmore batted around in its final at bat. Junior Holden Bridge had an RBI double, freshman Luke Mutz added an RBI single, junior Terell Dale drove in one with a sac fly, and junior Cole Beeker scored one on a fielder's choice.

GAME 2: Swarthmore 19, Stockton 4

The Garnet one-upped themselves at the plate in Game 2 by scoring 19 runs, which is shockingly just their third-best scoring effort this season. Swarthmore plated 27 against Scranton on March 9 and 22 against SUNY Canton on March 12.

Swarthmore had a nine-run third inning that included RBI hits from Beeker, Bridge, Mutz, Gillen and Sepe.

Gillen mashed his team-leading third home run of the season in the fourth inning over the high center field wall at Clothier Field that sits about 400 feet from home plate. Beeker and senior Jackson Roberts also contributed with RBI doubles in that frame.

Swarthmore concluded its monstrous day of offense with three runs in the sixth. Dale and senior Conor Elliott had run-scoring doubles.

Junior starter Sawyer Lake struck out five over four innings to bring his record to 2-1 this season. Senior Ricky Conti appeared for two innings of one-run baseball, and freshman Drew McMahan pitched a scoreless seventh.

The Garnet continue their home stand with a game against DeSales at Clothier Field on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.
