Kowalski Reaches 100 Career Wins

Gettysburg senior sixth Bullet to reach century mark

WESTMINSTER, Md. – Senior Colin Kowalski (Derwood, Md./Georgetown) posted a pair of victories Saturday afternoon to become the sixth wrestler at Gettysburg College to reach 100 career victories.

Gettysburg (6-6, 1-4 CC) was upended in a pair of Centennial Conference duals, falling to Washington and Lee University (10-3, 2-0 CC) 29-12 and Johns Hopkins University (5-4, 2-0 CC) 23-21.

Kowalski secured win No. 99 with a 7-0 decision over Alec Horne from Washington and Lee. He added a 10-2 major decision over Nathan Wertheimer in the day's second match to reach the century mark and join classmate Paul Triandafilou (Derwood, Md./Georgetown Prep). Kowalski has won 15 consecutive matches to run his season mark to 28-2 and improve his career record to 100-24.

Junior Colin Devlin (Dresher, Pa./Upper Dublin), freshman Ray Martin (Downingtown, Pa./West Chester Henderson), and Triandafilou all secured wins against W&L. Devlin picked up a 6-0 decision at 149 and Martin followed with an 8-2 win at 157. Triandafilou, ranked eighth in the country at heavyweight, closed the dual with a 4-0 win.

Sophomore Sean Thompson (Plainsboro, N.J./West Windsor-Plainsboro) posted the team's first victory against Johns Hopkins with an 8-0 major decision at 141 pounds. Devlin followed with his ninth pin of the season just past the two-minute mark at 149, improving his season record to 19-4.

Following Kowalski's win at 174, the Bullets closed the match with wins at 197 and heavyweight. Senior Dan Ebert (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Warde) scored a 12-2 major decision over Miles Gilliam at 197 before Triandafilou managed an escape for the only point in a decision over Henri Behaeghel. Triandafilou improved to 24-3 on the year and ran his career record to 112-18, leaving him two wins shy of Matt Shank '08 for second place on the program's career list.

Gettysburg will split its squad next weekend with the bulk of the lineup headed to Ursinus College to take on the Bears and Muhlenberg College beginning at noon on Saturday, Feb. 2. The rest of the team will travel to the Messiah Open on Saturday.
