No. 17 Wrestling clinches third straight Centennial dual title

WESTMINSTER, Md. (February 3, 2018)  – The seventeenth-ranked Stevens Institute of Technology wrestling team earned victories in 16 of 20 bouts in defeating Washington and University and Johns Hopkins University Saturday in a Centennial Conference quad meet at McDaniel College. The victories improved Stevens' record to 7-0 in conference duals, securing the Ducks' third straight dual championship. Stevens has won 22 consecutive Centennial Conference regular season duals.

The Ducks finished the regular season with a 13-3 dual record. Stevens has won its last eight duals. Washington and Lee defeated the United States Merchant Marine Academy to conclude the regular season with a 9-5 record and a 4-3 mark in the Centennial Conference. Johns Hopkins edged USMMA on the second tie-breaker to wrap up the regular season at 7-3 overall and 5-2 in the Centennial.

"I am very proud of the performance our guys have put on, not just this afternoon, but throughout the second semester," commented head coach Joe Favia. "They are believing in the process and they are right where they need to be as we enter the postseason. We are honored to take our third dual title, and we are looking forward to competing for our fourth conference championship next weekend."

In the day's opener, junior Joey Borai recorded an 8-1 decision over Ethan Hartman to open a stretch of six consecutive victories for the Ducks en route to a 26-13 victory over the Generals. Sophomore Troy Stanich pinned Matt Mueller to extend the Stevens lead to 9-0. Three straight decisions opened an 18-0 lead and junior Thomas Poklikuha scored a major decision win over Alecsander Home to give the Ducks a commanding 22-0 lead.

Washington and Lee earned a major decision victory at 174 pounds and a fall at 184 to draw within 12 points. With the dual's final outcome in the balance, freshman Colin Myles scored a 12-4 win over Zach England to add four points to the Stevens total and clinching the dual. Freshman Joseph Moreno dropped a hard-fought 3-1 decision in the first overtime period to round out the competition.

Against the Blue Jays, Stevens picked up a remarkable nine wins over 10 bouts to defeat Johns Hopkins, 30-3.

Borai opened the dual with a 6-1 decision victory over Christian Vallis for his 25th victory of the year. Stanich, the top-ranked wrestler in the country at 133 pounds, followed with his second win of the day to extend his 2017-18 unbeaten streak to 26. Fourth-ranked Brett Kaliner recorded his third technical fall of the year to push the Stevens advantage to 11-0. The West Chester, Pennsylvania native was leading 17-2 at the time of the stoppage.

Sophomore Dylan Van Sickell and No. 4 Zach Wilhelm posted consecutive decision victories and senior Josh Smith claimed a major decision win to give the Ducks a commanding 24-0 lead. Johns Hopkins finally got on the board with a decision win at 184 pounds, however, Myles and Moreno each posted decision victories of their own to round out the scoring.

The 27-point margin of victory was the largest for Stevens since a 43-9 win over McDaniel on Jan. 21, 2017.
