Meet Highlights
- Swarthmore swept both relay races to open and end the meet. In the 200 medley relay, Ethan Marotte held off a charging Cort Hobelmann (Nashville, Tenn./Owensboro) over the final 50 yards to win by less than a second at 1:33.91. Juniors Nick Cox (Purcellville, Va./Ponte Vedra) and Zac Evans (Egg Harbor Township, N.J./Egg Harbor Township) and senior Sam Nonemaker (Shippensburg, Pa./Shippensburg) teamed with Hobelmann to post a time of 1:34.76. Gettysburg suffered a disqualification on an exchange in the 400 free relay, spoiling a fantastic finish by senior Duncan Proxmire (McLean, Va./Langley) which seemingly gave the Bullets a victory.
- Proxmire shined in his two individual events. Competing in the 200 free, the senior turned in the fastest split times in each of final three 50s and won by over two seconds over Tristan Haeger at 1:43.28. Later in the meet, Proxmire won his head-to-head matchup with Swarthmore's Ben Freeman in the 500 free, scooping up a near six-second win at 4:43.99.
- It was a day for the seniors to shine with both Nonemaker and Oliver Pickering (Millburn, N.J./Millburn) adding a pair of individual wins. Nonemaker picked up back-to-back wins in the freestyle sprints, first winning the 50 free in 21.19 heading into a break in the meet and then coming right back to claim the 100 free in 47.47.
- Pickering featured in three incredible battles in the water and came away with two wins. Pickering rallied past Jeremy Rockaway in the 200 fly, closing his final 50 yards in 30.70 and winning by 0.13 seconds, the exact margin Rockaway managed to win by in the pair's first meeting at the Gettysburg Invite in December. Rockaway pulled out a split by out-touching Pickering in the 100 fly by 0.41 seconds at 51.41, but the Gettysburg senior came right back for a win in the 200 IM. Swarthmore appeared destined to win the race with Ben Wesley, Horace Shew, and Andrew Karpenko sitting among the top three for most of the race, but Pickering remained in the picture and made his move over the final 25 yards despite losing his swim cap. Pickering raced to the wall in 26.70 in the final freestyle leg to beat out Wesley at 1:57.04.
- Cox remained unbeaten in the backstroke against conference opponents this season by claiming both the 100 and 200 against Swarthmore. He finished with a time of 51.70 to claim the 100 back over Shew and cruised to the wall in 1:56.74 in the 200.
- Sophomore Luke McKenna (Collegeville, Pa./Spring-Ford) was Gettysburg's top finisher in the 1,000 free with a runner-up time of 9:56.09 and finished right behind Proxmire and Freeman in the 500 at 4:50.75. Sophomore Charlie Cross (Charlottesville, Va./Albemarle) placed third in the two breaststroke races, posting a time of 1:00.24 in the 100 and 2:11.31 in the 200.
The Series
Swarthmore picked up its fourth-straight win over Gettysburg, but the Bullets remain in front of the all-time series at 51-19.
