ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa.--Swarthmore College Baseball traveled to beat Elizabethtown, 16-12, on Friday, completing non-conference play with a 13-5 record.
Entering the day, the Garnet hadn't scored more than 13 runs in a game this season or allowed more than 11. However, nine Swarthmore players contributed with at least one hit against the Blue Jays, and seven had an RBI.
In the top of the first inning, junior
Charles Levitt hit his first triple of the season. It was also the first of a season-high 19 hits for the Garnet, nine of which were extra-base hits. Their previous high was 14.
Later that inning, sophomore
Jared Gillen notched an RBI double, and junior Chase Elliott drove in Gillen with a single. Gillen and Elliot both went 3-for-6 in the contest.
Swarthmore scored three in the first, and Elizabethtown scored two. However, the Garnet separated themselves in the second inning, plating six runners.
Levitt hit a grand slam, expanding his team-leading home run total to five this season.
A few batters later, junior
Jackson Roberts chipped in with an RBI double. He went 3-for-6 in the game and now has a team-best .418 batting average. Roberts scored that inning on a single by freshman
Michael Sepe.
To continue the streak, the Garnet scored their 10th run of the game in the third frame as sophomore
Cole Beeker plated sophomore
AJ Liu with a single.
By standards, Swarthmore went cold, scoring just two runs over the next five innings, and both came in the fifth.
One of those runs came off the bat of Liu, who hit his first career collegiate homer. The other was a single by Gillen that scored Levitt.
Swarthmore took a 12-8 lead into the ninth inning, and the bats came alive again. Roberts hit a two-RBI double, Gillen had an RBI single, and Elliot scored Gillen with a double.
The Garnet managed to use just two pitchers in the game compared to Elizabethtown's eight. Sophomore
Ryan Warm pitched the first five innings and picked up his first win of 2018. Freshman
Owen Webb hung on to the lead by pitching the last four innings.
Swarthmore opens up Centennial Conference play at home with a doubleheader against Johns Hopkins on Saturday beginning at 12:30 p.m.
