Timmy Pilrun pitched a complete-game five-hitter and allowed only one earned run as the Muhlenberg baseball team edged Haverford, 3-2, for its second consecutive win.
Pilrun
(pictured above) faced only three batters over the minimum in the final seven innings en route to his second consecutive nine-inning complete game. In two career starts at Haverford, Pilrun has allowed two earned runs and eight hits in 16 innings.
Pilrun let his fielders do the work, striking out only two, and did the work himself in the second, picking a runner off of second base to end the inning. The Mules (13-16, 5-6) turned balls in the air into double plays in the first and sixth innings, and junior catcher
Matt Riebesell picked off a runner to end the eighth. Pilrun finished off the game with a 1-2-3 ninth.
Riebesell hit a sacrifice fly to give Muhlenberg an early 1-0 lead in the first, and a double by sophomore
Brenden Weiss brought home sophomore
Jack Avallone, who had led off with a single, to make it 2-0 in the second.
The Fords (14-15, 7-4) tied the game with a two-run homer in the bottom of the second.
The Mules plated the winning run in the fourth. Weiss led off with an infield single and went to second on a balk. One out later, freshman
Robert Cappadona hit an opposite-field double to bring home Weiss.
Half of Muhlenberg's eight hits went for extra bases, with junior
Jon Capra and sophomore
Billy Brittingham hitting doubles in addition to Weiss and Cappadona.
