Field hockey blanked by Franklin & Marshall

LANCASTER, Pa. — The Elizabethtown College field hockey team got an early-season test when it faced nationally-ranked No. 6 Franklin & Marshall on the road in its season opener Tuesday evening at Tylus Field. The Diplomats scored a pair of goals in each half to sink the Blue Jays, 4-0. Margo Donlin made nine saves in the cage in her first collegiate appearance.

Franklin & Marshall (1-0) was relentless in the first half, holding the Jays' offense at bay while creating plenty of its own. The Diplomats outshot Elizabethtown (0-1) 8-0 in the first 35 minutes and held a 12-0 advantage in penalty corners.

Maria Guarisco scored her first of two goals less than three minutes into the non-conference contest. Her shot from about five yards out on the left side found the back of the cage. She netted her second a little over five minutes into the second half.

Andrea Keady and Alyssa Aichele registered the first two shots for E-town. Both attempts had to be saved by F&M's starting goalie Ashley Gubernick to keep the Jays off the scoreboard.

Donlin made eight of her nine saves in the second half, including stopping two penalty strokes. With a little over ten minutes remaining in the game, the freshman made back-to-back saves on Bridget Falcone before a stroke was called. Not buckling under the pressure, Donlin made sure the scoreline remained the same at 3-0, stopping Katherine Kistler's attempt. Seven minutes later, she was called upon once more to stop a penalty stroke, which she did.

Elizabethtown will host Muhlenberg on Saturday, September 5 at 1 p.m. in its home opener at Wolf Field.
