GETTYSBURG, Pa. – The Gettysburg College baseball held on for the 9-8 victory after defeating non-conference opponent Lebanon Valley College 9-8 at Kirchhoff Field on Wednesday.
The Bullets (7-4) and Flying Dutchmen (9-4) were tied at 7-7 heading into the bottom of the sixth inning, but an RBI double by junior
Joe Giovinco (Stirling, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) and an RBI single bunt by freshman
Matthew Muir (South Easton, Mass./Oliver Ames) in the bottom of the seventh lifted Gettysburg past Lebanon Valley.
The Flying Dutchmen landed on the scoreboard in the top of the second after posting three runs with Josh Herring hitting a two-run RBI double to right center.
The Bullets then exploded in the bottom of the second inning, registering six runs to take a 6-3 advantage. Freshman
Mark Seibert (Yardley, Pa./Holy Ghost Preparatory) opened the frame with a double to center field with junior
Ryan Augustus (Freehold, N.J./Princeton Day School) reaching base on a defensive error by the third baseman and sophomore
Harry Quimby (Wilmington, Del./Tower Hill) was then walked to load the bases. Gettysburg then collected three consecutive runs with Seibert, Augustus, and Quimby all scoring. Sophomore
Sean Murphy (Westfield, Mass./Westfield) grounded out to the first baseman, allowing freshman
Andrew Decker (Baltimore, Md./Towson) to score the fourth run. A two-run RBI single to left center by Giovinco on the next play pushed the Bullets lead to three.
Three more runs between the two teams occurred in the third inning with Lebanon Valley adding two in the top of the inning and the Bullets posting one at the bottom from an RBI single by sophomore
Matt Szczesny (Schwenksville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley).
The Flying Dutchmen tied the game at 7-7 after registering a run scored from Josh Herring and Chris Declerico in the top of the fourth inning.
After going scoreless in the fourth and fifth inning, Gettysburg broke through in the bottom of the sixth inning as Giovinco doubled to left field to bring Murphy across the plate to take the 8-7 lead. The Bullets extended the advantage to two when Augutus scored off Muir's RBI single bunt in the bottom of the seventh.
With two outs in the top of the ninth inning, Lebanon Valley came within one after scoring off a wild pitch. The Flying Dutchmen had one player still on second base, but sophomore pitcher
Erik Wortmann (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) concluded the game by striking out the final batter for his third of the inning.

tossed an outstanding season-high eight strikeouts after relieving senior
Will Wortmann (Bedford, N.Y./Fox Lane) in the top of the fourth. E. Wortmann struck out six batters in the final three innings to help the Bullets defensive unit.
Giovinvo and Decker each went 3-for-4 at the plate, while Szczesny, Seibert, and Muir finished with two hits each. Giovinco added three RBI and a double with Szczesny and Muir notching two RBI apiece.
Gettysburg resume action at home on Friday with a non-conference game against Lancaster Bible College at 3:30 p.m.
