F&M swept #10 Johns Hopkins to open the 2021 season, as Matt Devlin twirled a Game 1 gem (8 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 9 K), and Kyle Roche did even better in the second game (6 IP, 2 H, 9 K).

Game Notes

  • Pat Elliott helped set the table for the Diplomats in their 3-0 week last week, scoring the game-winning runs in both the 3-2 walkoff win against Ursinus and the 4-1 win against Muhlenberg.

  • Starting pitching came up huge this past week, allowing just five runs across three games. Charlie Wright, Kyle Roche, and Greg Nieskens combined for 21 innings of work, allowing just 15 hits and four runs, while punching out 21 via strikeout.

  • Dan Galef continues his stretch of solid relief, now tossing his sixth straight appearance without a run, while picking up his first save in the 7-2 win against Muhlenberg. The first-year has now gone nine straight innings, allowing just a single hit while striking out 13.

  • Nieskens now sits first in the Centennial in wins (5), third in ERA (2.94), and fourth in strikeouts (42) after the weekend.

  • The Diplomats just keep winning at home, racking up a 15-3 record since 2020 at the friendly confines of Caplan Field.

  • All we need is three runs to get it done. F&M enters the week with a 14-4 record when scoring at least three runs this season.

  • F&M's 5-0 start marks the second straight year the Diplomats began Centennial play with five consecutive victories. Before last year, the last time F&M went this long into CC play undefeated was 2002, when the team won six straight to open.

      • You'd need to run back to 2007 for the last time the Diplomats won five straight in CC play, when they rattled off nine straight after a CC opener loss to Ursinus.

      • 12 straight victories is what the 1995 team started conference play with, ultimately finishing with just a single loss in the CC and a 22-22 tie at Haverford.

  • The Diplomats get to play host at Clipper Magazine Stadium, home of the Atlantic League's Lancaster Barnstormers on Friday afternoon against Dickinson. It's the first time they're hosting away from Caplan since the 2016 season, when they also played at the Clip.

      • The team previously played at an Atlantic League ballpark in 2010, facing Rowan at the now defunct (and demolished) Campbells Field in Camden, N.J. - former home of the Camden Riversharks.

      • F&M also played at PNC Field in Moosic, Pa. - home of the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Railriders - in the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional Tournament in 2013.
