Grapplers Rally for Two Centennial Wins

Gettysburg defeats Washington & Lee and Johns Hopkins

LEXINGTON, Va. – The Gettysburg College wrestling team erased a pair of deficits to claim Centennial Conference wins over Washington and Lee University and Johns Hopkins University Saturday afternoon.

Gettysburg (8-4, 3-1 CC) trailed Washington and Lee (8-4, 3-2 CC) 18-9 before rallying to tie the match in the final two bouts and coming out on top 19-18 thanks to the tiebreaker advantage. The Bullets came back from a six-point deficit against Johns Hopkins University (6-2, 4-1 CC) to win 22-13.

Senior Lenny Ogozalek (Summit Hill, Pa./Panther Valley) opened the Washington and Lee match with a 5-1 victory at 125. The Bullets fell behind as the Generals won the next two matches and reigning CC Wrestler of the Week Bryce Crew looked to make it three in a row after busting out to an 8-0 lead over sophomore Colin Devlin (Dresher, Pa./Upper Dublin). Devlin stormed back and pulled off an improbable 9-8 victory to tie the team scoring.

Following a major decision win by Washington and Lee, junior Colin Kowalski (Derwood, Md./Georgetown Prep) kept the visitors close with a 3-2 win at 165.

Back-to-back wins by Washington and Lee left Gettysburg needing big scores from its final two grapplers. Freshman Mike Iodice (Flemington, N.J./Hunterdon Central) provided the key blow by recording a fall one second before the end of the second period against Zach England at 197 pounds. Junior Paul Triandafilou (Derwood, Md./Georgetown Prep) followed up with a 4-1 decision over Matt Kaminer to tie the team scoring 18-18.

The first tiebreaker went to individual wins and with each team claiming five, a second tiebreaker was instituted. The second tiebreaker was number of falls and Iodice's pin stood as the difference maker.

Gettysburg handed Johns Hopkins its first conference loss by winning six of the final eight bouts. The Blue Jays took a quick 6-0 lead with decisions at the first two weights, but freshman Sean Thompson (Plainsboro, N.J./West Windsor-Plainsboro South) and Devlin notched a decision (7-6) and major decision (11-3) at 141 and 149, respectively, to put the Bullets in front 7-6.

Johns Hopkins took the lead at the halfway point with a major decision at 157. Kowalski came right back with his own major (8-0) and improved to 27-4 this season. Senior Quinn Merrigan (Canton, Mass./Canton) extended the advantage with a 15-9 decision at 165.

After the Blue Jays pulled to 14-13 with a decision at 184, the Bullets once again closed with the final two wins. Senior Anthony Puca (Huntington, N.Y./Huntington) scored a 4-0 win at 197 and Triandafilou capped the day with a dominating first-period technical fall (16-0). Triandafilou, who came into the day ranked eighth by D3wrestle.com and 10th by the National Wrestling Coaches Association, improved to 25-4 on the year.

Gettysburg competes at a pair of events next Saturday, Feb. 3. A contingent of wrestlers will head to McDaniel College for Centennial duals against Muhlenberg College, Ursinus College, and U.S. Merchant Marine Academy beginning at noon. The rest of the team will compete at the Messiah College Open starting at 10 a.m.
