Men's Basketball Falls to Salisbury, 78-69

Joey Kern Led Hopkins With 17 Points

The Basics 
• Score: JHU - 69, Salisbury - 78

• The Short Story: Three Blue Jays scored in double-figures but it wasn't enough as the Johns Hopkins men's basketball team fell to Salisbury, 78-69 in the championship game of the Optimist International Tournament.

How it Happened
• The Seagulls took a 10-4 lead at 13:34 but a three from Joey Kern cut the Salisbury lead in half at 12:37. The teams then exchanged three-point shots with Gary Briddell hitting from deep to make the score 13-7 and Kern responding with a shot from behind the arc to make it a 13-10 game at 11:54 in the first half.
• A three from Briddell gave the home team a nine-point advantage as his shot at 9:14 made the score 21-12. Conner Delaney made it a six-point game with a three at 8:45 and a three from Joey Fitzpatrick at the eight-minute mark made the score 21-18, and a layup from Kern made it a one-point game.
Noah Ralby put Hopkins up 23-21 with a three at 5:42 but a 5-0 Salisbury run gave the Seagulls a 26-23 lead, however, a layup from Alex Schachne made it a one-point Seagull lead. Salisbury got its lead back up to four, but a three from Kern with four seconds left sent the teams into the half with the score 31-30.
Michael Gardner opened the second half with a three to give the Blue Jays a 33-31 lead as he scored the first eight Blue Jay points of the half and his three at 17:33 tied the game at 38.
• A 9-0 run by Salisbury made the score 50-40 before a three from Schachne stopped the Seagulls run and made the score 50-43. Back-to-back threes from Gardner cut the Salisbury lead to three with 10:23 remaining and a three from Tom Quarry tied the game at 52.
• The teams continued to go back-and-forth before Salisbury pulled away and took a seven-point lead with 1:17 remaining as the Seagulls would hang on for the 78-69 victory.

What it Means
• Hopkins is now 5-4 all-time against Salisbury as the Seagulls have won the last three meetings.

Inside the Box Score
• Kern finished with a team-high 17 points while Gardner chipped in 16 and Delaney finished with 12.
• Kern went 4-8 from deep as the Blue Jays made 14 three-pointers in the game while Salisbury converted on eight shots from deep.
• Briddell and James Foley both scored 20 points for the Seagulls.

• The Blue Jays will make their home debut on Tuesday, November 20 as JHU will host McDaniel at 8pm in Centennial Conference action.
