COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Junior forward
Emily Gibbons (Annapolis, Md./Severn School) posted her 10th double-double of the season and Gettysburg held off a late rally to earn a 65-51 Centennial Conference (CC) women's basketball victory at Ursinus College Saturday afternoon.
Â
Gibbons registered game-highs of 22 points and 17 rebounds as the Bullets (10-4, 6-3 CC) won for the seventh time in their last eight games. Gibbons, who entered the game ranked fourth in Division III in rebounding (13.7 rpg), tied the third-highest rebound total of her career.
Â
Sophomore guard
Emma Dorshimer (Jenkintown, Pa./Jenkintown) added 19 points and eight rebounds while shooting 7-for-7 at the foul line for Gettysburg, which opened up some breathing room with a 15-0 run that spanned both halves. Junior guard
Kendra Meredith (Boyds, Md./Northwest) contributed 11 points and four assists for the Orange and Blue.
Â
Gettysburg out-rebounded the Bears 39-26 and shot a season-best 83.3 percent (20-for-24) at the free-throw line.
Â
Lydia Konstanzer paced Ursinus (7-8, 5-5 CC) with 14 points and 10 rebounds while Rachel Guy chipped in with 12 points. Toni Suler blocked five shots for the Bears.
Â
The Bullets held a comfortable 51-38 lead with 7:45 left, but that's when Ursinus assembled a 10-0 run to climb back into it. Libby Lannon converted back-to-back lay-ups before Kaci McNeave and Guy knocked down back-to-back 3-pointers, making it a one-possession game (51-48) with 3:57 to go.
Â
Gibbons ended the Ursinus run with a big put-back with 3:23 remaining, sparking a 14-3 Gettysburg run to end the game. The Bullets did the bulk of their damage at the foul line, where they went 10-for-11 during the stretch and 8-for-8 in the final 38 seconds.
Â
In the opening half, the Bullets led just once, when it was a 2-1 game. The Bears opened the contest on an 11-4 run, then pushed their lead to as much as 12 (18-6) with 3:07 left in the opening quarter.
Â
Gibbons single-handedly brought her team back, scoring the final six points of the period as Gettysburg cut the deficit in half (18-12) heading into the second quarter.
Â
Dorshimer hit a pair of free throws early in the second quarter to cap an 8-0 Bullet run and make it a four-point game. A 5-0 Bear spurt pushed the hosts' lead back to seven (25-18) just under three minutes into the period; however, Gettysburg answered with the next six points, going 4-for-4 at the foul line during the stretch to draw to within one (25-24) after a pair of charity tosses from freshman guard
Ashley Gehrin (Chester, N.J./West Morris Mendham).
Â
A Konstanzer lay-up put the Bears up 27-24 with 1:44 left in the half, but that's when the Bullets commenced on their 15-0 run. Freshman forward
Emma Hahner (Forest Hill, Md./C. Milton Wright) kicked it off with a free throw before Gibbons dropped in a runner with 33 seconds on the clock, pulling Gettysburg even (27-27) at the break.
Â
Gibbons' bucket gave her a first-half double-double of 11 points and 10 rebounds.
Â
Dorshimer buried a 3-pointer eight seconds into the second half, sparking a 12-0 Bullet run to begin the stanza. Gibbons (seven points) and Dorshimer (five points) accounted for all of the scoring during the surge, and a pair of Gibbons free throws put the Bullets up 39-27 with 6:30 left in the quarter.
Â
Marisa DiLeo snapped Ursinus' scoring drought when she hit a 3-pointer with 5:59 on the clock, and the Bears would pull to within five (43-38) with 28 seconds left in the quarter. But Meredith found freshman forward
Lindsay Hiner (New Britain, Pa./Springside Chestnut Hill Academy) under the basket for a lay-in just before the buzzer, giving the Bullets a 45-38 advantage heading into the final quarter.
Â
Hiner's basket marked the start of an 8-0 Gettysburg run. Meredith, Gehrin, and Gibbons all converted lay-ups early in the fourth quarter as Gettysburg built its 13-point lead before Ursinus' late rally.
Â
Gettysburg returns home on Wednesday, when it hosts McDaniel College at 8 p.m. in another Centennial Conference affair.
