Women's Soccer Ties Haverford On Senior Day

SWARTHMORE, Pa.—No. 21 Swarthmore College Women's Soccer closed out the regular season with a 1-1 draw against Haverford College for the second year in a row. Swarthmore (13-2-2, 7-1-2 Centennial) approaches the Centennial Conference Tournament as the second seed and will face McDaniel College on Saturday on the campus of Johns Hopkins University.

In Saturday night's game, the Garnet conceded a goal in the 30th minute and had to play from behind. With just three minutes and 53 seconds left in the game, Swarthmore finally evened the count of a goal by senior Marin McCoy, her 10th of the season. Her tally forced overtime and with neither team able to find the back of the net in the extra periods, the game ended locked up at 1-1.

Both teams took four shots in the first half, but Swarthmore, playing from behind, rattled off 11 attempts in the second half. Swarthmore's defense only allowed one shot in the second half and two in overtime.

McCoy nearly evened the count in the 63rd minute off a set piece. Her free kick from outside the box curled over the wall and towards the upper corner of the goal, but missed my just inches.

McCoy's equalizer in the 87th minute came after senior Caroline Coats won the ball in transition with a strong tackle on the right wing. Coats slid a pass out did to Lizzie King on the right side and King drove a beautiful cross to the far post. McCoy tracked the ball, darted in from the middle of the box, jumped up and volleyed in the pass from close range.

Prior to the game, Swarthmore honored McCoy, Coats, Yasmeen Namazie, Melissa Curran and Amy Shmoys.

More information about Swarthmore's playoff game will be made available on Monday.
