SWARTHMORE, Pa.--Swarthmore College baseball came back to beat Muhlenberg College 6-3 on Friday, bringing its record to 20-6 overall and 7-1 in the Centennial Conference.
The Garnet now sit alone in first place in the conference, a half of a game ahead of Johns Hopkins University. The Blue Jays (17-9, 6-1) play Gettysburg College (7-16, 1-6) at 6 p.m. on Friday.
This is just the second time in the last five seasons that Swarthmore has reached the 20-win mark. Head coach
Matt Midkiff's highest win total as head coach of the Garnet is 22 in both 2013 and 2016. There are 11 games remaining on Swarthmore's regular-season schedule.
On Friday, the Garnet found themselves down 2-0 after the first inning. However, sophomore
Ryan Warm came into his own, retiring 14 straight batters and refusing to allow a hit from the third to the eighth inning.
By that time, Swarthmore had a 4-2 lead. The big hits were an RBI double from sophomore
Cole Beeker and an RBI single from junior Connor Elliott, both in the seventh.
In the bottom of the eighth, senior
Matt Palmer hit his first home run of the season. It was a solo shot that cleared the tall 339-foot fence in left-center field and drilled the dormitory that sits behind it.
Junior
Jackson Roberts went 3-for-5 with a double, contributing with an RBI single in the eighth. His .402 batting average is the best in the conference.
In the ninth, sophomore Jackson Corkery came on for his conference-leading fifth save of the season. He hasn't allowed a hit or a run in his last seven appearances, all of which were one inning.
Warm improved to 3-0 this season, dropping his ERA to 3.89. His final numbers against the Mules were eight innings and nine strikeouts while allowing five hits and two earned runs with three walks.
Beeker went 3-for-4 with a double and joined Roberts, Elliott and junior Charlie Levitt on the list of Swarthmore players hitting above .300 this year.
The Garnet will hit the road for a doubleheader at Franklin and Marshall College (10-11-2, 4-3-1) Saturday at 12 p.m.
