Day One Results & Team Scoring

YORK, PA – The Johns Hopkins wrestling team sits in fifth place with 28 points in the 16-team New Standard Corporation Invitational at York College after the first day of competition.  Four Blue Jays remain alive in the championship bracket of their respective weight classes entering Saturday's quarterfinals, which will begin at 9:30 am.  The four combined to win all seven of their matches with all seven wins securing bonus points for the Blue Jays.

The Quarterfinalists
Senior Ricky Cavallo (133) finished as the runner-up in this tournament last season and cruised into Saturday's quarterfinals with a pair of wins.  He needed just 1:59 to pin Ithaca's Jeremy Puente and then topped Trey Templeton of Apprentice, 11-2.  He will meet Matt Armamento of Johnson & Wales in Saturday morning's quarterfinals.

Graduate student Lucas Escobar (149) returned to the team earlier this week and needed just over six minutes to secure two pins to move into the quarters.  He opened with a pin of Daniel Smith (Etown) in 4:09 and used just 130 seconds to pin Rob Duxbury of Delaware Valley.  Escobar will meet Baldwin-Wallace's Stanley Bleich in the quarterfinals.

Sophomore Dominick Reyes (157) opened with a 23-7 technical fall of Noah Supsic of Ursinus and then advanced to the quarterfinals with a second-period fall of Sam Tenaglia of Johnson & Wales.  He'll meet Dylan Van Sickell of Stevens in Saturday's quarters.

Senior Isaac Morales (184) needed to win just once to advance to the quarters as he had an opening-round bye and then scored an 18-3 technical fall victory over Malcolm Hunt of Ursinus. Morales is matched with Anthony Malfitano of Roger Williams in Saturday morning's quarterfinals.

Morgan, Gilliam Alive In Consolation Bracket
Seniors Dane Morgan (165) and Miles Gilliam (197) remain alive in the consolation bracket entering Saturday's second day of competition.

Morgan drew top-seeded Taylor Shay of Roger Williams in the opening round and dropped a 10-4 decision, but bounced back with first-period pin of Hunter Beaudet of Elizabethtown to advance to Saturday.  His first match on day two will be against TCNJ's Nico Cofone.

Gilliam fell to York's Cam Farrow, 5-0, in his first match to slip into the consolation bracket.  There, he scored a pair of second-period pins to move onto Saturday's competition.  He needed 3:35 to pin TCNJ's Matt Cornely and just 21 seconds more than that to deck Averett's Chris Mohr.  He'll open his second day of action against TCNJ's Alex Mirabella.
