Wrestling Captures Scotty Wood Duals Title

The Muhlenberg wrestling team won all four dual matches to capture the Scotty Wood Duals tournament championship.

The Mules defeated Kent State Tuscarawas and Keystone by over 20 points in both of its round-robin matches to start the day. Muhlenberg then came from behind in both the semifinal against Washington & Jefferson and the championship vs. Camden County, winning 26-21 and 27-20, respectively.

Senior Jake Gordon and junior Gennaro Cerminara won all four of their matches on the day. Cerminara recorded first-period pins in three of his four victories, including the title-clinching fall against his Camden County opponent. Gordon racked up two major decisions, including an important 13-5 victory against Camden County to give Muhlenberg a 21-14 lead in the championship dual.

Junior Jimmy Fratantoni wrestled maybe the most important bout of them all at 174. Against Camden County with Muhlenberg trailing 14-12, Fratantoni battled his way to a 21-6 technical fall in the third period to provide his team the overall lead. Fratantoni was honored as most valuable wrestler for his efforts.

Junior Dylan Schwartz won three of his four bouts at 165 with a pin and a technical fall. Sophomore Scott Schaeffer was victorious in three bouts at heavyweight, including a pin against Keystone and a major decision facing W&J.

Sophomore Austin Sherman earned a 19-4 technical fall victory in his first match and a hard-fought 8-2 decision in his second match. Sophomore Connor McGee pinned his Kent State foe as one of his two victories, and sophomore Michael Dougan took down his Camden County opponent with a first-period pin.

Freshman Cliff Cornell earned the first pin of his career in his first match, taking down his Kent State opponent late in the first period. Senior Ben Peck and sophomore Cam Wasson also recorded pins in their first match.
