A record-setting performance by junior
Anthony Ware highlighted the first meet of the 2016-17 season for the Muhlenberg indoor track and field teams.
The Mules sent a limited contingent of 18 sprinters, hurdlers, jumpers and throwers to the Lehigh Season Opener but still had many strong performances, with eight making the program's all-time top 10.
Ware
(pictured at left) won the 60 meters with a time of 6.92 seconds, breaking the school record of 6.96 he set last year. Running in the final heat, he beat out two runners from Division I Penn. Ware's time was a considerable improvement over the 7.04 he ran at the same meet a year ago; his 6.96 didn't come until the final meet of the season. Only 14 Division III runners posted a faster time than 6.92 all last year.
Ware also set a personal best of 23.40 in winning his heat and placing eighth overall in the 200 meters.
Freshman
Christopher Dasaro, in his first career race, won his heat of the 60 in 7.33 to land ninth on the performance list. Two other freshmen -
Cameron Ford (sixth in the triple jump) and
Matt Polanco (10th in the 60-meter hurdles) - opened their careers with top-10 performances for the men's team.
Sophomore
Alex Russo got his season off to a good start in the pole vault, clearing 12-5½ - just a half-inch short of his personal best from last year.
On the women's side, freshman hurdlers
Rashida Haye (eighth) and
Kiley McBride (10th) put their names on the performance list in their debut races, finishing 1-2 in their heat. Pictured above, left to right, are McBride, Haye and another freshman,
Alison Stouffer.
Sophomore
Hailey Kleinberg set a personal best of 8.46 in the 60 meters, moving from 10th to a tie for ninth on the performance list.
The Mules' season starts in earnest on January 21 at the Collegeville Classic.
