The Muhlenberg wrestling team tried out a new home playing arena and won both dual matches in Seegers Union Event Space, the first athletic event to ever be held in the student union center of Muhlenberg's campus.
Â
The Mules (9-5) first beat Case Western Reserve 31-11 and then defeated Penn State Mont Alto 38-14. Four wrestlers won both their matches, including sophomores
Gennaro Cerminara and
Jimmy Fratantoni and freshmen
Steven Rice and
Austin Sherman.
Â
Fratantoni earned a technical fall victory against Case Western in his first match and pinned his Penn State Mont Alto opponent in the third period, his third pin of the season. Fratantoni is now 16-9 this season.
Â
Cerminara and Rice each pinned their Case Western opponent in the first period before winning by forfeit in their second match. Sherman in his first match scored a takedown and an escape in the first two periods before the riding time advantage gave him a 4-2 decision against Case Western. He also won his second match by forfeit.
Â
Freshman
Scott Schaeffer, coming off his first-place finish in the
Will Abele Invitational, scored the Mules' third pin of the day in his match against Penn State Mont Alto. The pin was his second of the season and moved his record to 7-6 this season as a heavyweight. Schaeffer fought a close match against his Case Western opponent as well, but a strong third period and riding time advantage gave the decision to his opponent 9-8.
Â
Muhlenberg scored three more match victories against Case Western. Junior
Jake Gordon jumped out to a 14-5 lead through two periods and recorded a takedown followed by a near fall in the final thirty seconds to earn a technical fall victory. The win for Gordon improved his record to 17-9 this season.
Â
Freshman
Quentin Bernhard and junior
Will Lamb each won by decision. Bernhard was taken down by his Case Western opponent in the third period but pulled a reversal with a minute left to earn the 4-2 match victory. Lamb scored three takedowns and only let his opponent score on escapes in an 8-2 decision.
Â
Freshman
Connor McGee bounced back from a defeat against Case Western with a first period technical fall victory against Penn State Mont Alto. Freshman
Michael Dougan also earned a victory against Penn State Mont Alto, scoring an 8-2 decision with three takedowns, an escape and riding time advantage.
In an exhibition match to close out the day, junior
Logan Laughlin pinned his Penn State Mont Alto opponent 1:19 into the first period.
