Baseball Sweeps Roger Williams

SWARTHMORE, Pa.—After a massive team effort to clear Clothier Baseball Field of snow on Saturday, Swarthmore College took the field on Sunday for a doubleheader against the Roger Williams University Hawks. The Garnet doubled up the Hawks in game one, 8-4, and then blasted them 13-5 in the second game.

GAME ONE: Roger Williams 4, Swarthmore 8

Swarthmore's Swayer Lake got his first win of the season with a five-inning performance in which he struck out five batters. Lake was responsible for all of Roger Williams' runs and then Adam Schauer pitched two shutout innings in relief to close out the game, striking out one.

Cole Beeker had a standout performance, connecting for three hits, two of which were doubles, and knocking in two runs. Conor Elliott, batting behind Beeker in the cleanup position, registered two RBIs as well.

Beeker put Swarthmore on the board in the first inning, working a full count and then doubling to left center to score Charlie Levitt. Jackson Roberts later singled to center to plate Beaker.

Roger Williams picked up a run in the second inning and then took the lead in the third with three runs.

Jared Gillen started the comeback with the first of his two triples on the day, a shot to right field in the third inning that scored Roberts.

Matt Palmer singled to send Gillen home and later scored himself that inning on an RBI single from AJ Liu.

Beeker brought in another run in the fifth, and then Elliott mashed a two-run double to left to score Beeker and Elliott.

GAME TWO: Roger Williams 5, Swarthmore 13

In game two, Ricky Conti threw a career-best six strikeouts in six innings for the win on the mound. Jack Corkery pitched the final inning and struck out one batter.

The Garnet trailed early, falling behind 3-0, but started to rally in the bottom of the fourth. Roberts had an RBI single, and then Jared Gillen went after the first pitch of the at-bat and stroked a triple to right center. Gillen scored on a sac fly from freshman Cole Hebble and tied the game at 3-3.

A pair of doubles in the fifth from Elliott and Roberts and a wild pitch added three more runs to Swarthmore's total.

The wheels fell off for the Hawks in the sixth. Swarthmore pounced for seven runs in a marathon inning to put the game out of reach.

Liu reached base in all four of his plate appearances, going 2-for-2 with two walks. Beeker went 1-for-5 and brought in two runs. Elliott batted 2-for-3 with an RBI, and Roberts went 2-for-3 with two RBIs.

Swarthmore hosts Neumann University on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.
