Field Hockey Upsets No. 5 F&M

The Muhlenberg field hockey team started off Centennial Conference play with a bang, scoring a 1-0 upset of fifth-ranked Franklin & Marshall.

The Diplomats (5-1, 0-1), the defending CC champions, came in as one of only two teams in Division III that was undefeated and unscored-upon. They outscored their first five opponents by a 14-0 margin.

It was the second time in the last three years that the Mules (1-4, 1-0) defeated an F&M team ranked in the top 10. In 2016, Muhlenberg posted a 1-0 win in Lancaster when the Diplomats were ranked sixth.

Muhlenberg made the most of its first real scoring opportunity. A little more than eight minutes into the second half, the Mules were awarded their first - and only - penalty corner. Senior Stephi Rydgren's insertion was played to freshman Sarah Raab, who passed to senior Emily Davis on her left. Davis sent a pass into the middle, and freshman Megan Webber redirected the ball to the left post, where Rydgren tipped it in for her 14th career goal.

The defense made the goal stand up, with backs Raab, Maleah Hess and Sophie Beeler limiting the Diplomats to six shots on goal - all of which were saved by junior Jordan Segrave, who recorded her fourth career shutout.

The Mules are the only team to shut out F&M in a CC game since 2009, and they've now done it twice.
