SALISBURY, Md. – Second-ranked Salisbury University ran off an eight-goal run in the first half and maintained the advantage to get past No. 6 Gettysburg College 17-10 in a top 10 men's lacrosse battle Saturday afternoon.
With each of the last three decisions with Gettysburg (2-1) decided by a goal, Salisbury (4-0) made left nothing to chance with a big run with 8:15 left in the first quarter. After junior
Brian Kolen (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) put Gettysburg ahead 2-1, five different Sea Gulls found the back of the net over a 13-minute span, including three goals by Tyler Snyder and two by Cross Ferrara.
Junior
Jack Harvey (New Providence, N.J./New Providence) stopped the run with an unassisted tally at 8:07 in the second quarter, but a goal by Corey Gwin gave Salisbury a 10-3 advantage heading into the locker room.
Freshman
Kieran Ward (Malvern, Pa./Malvern Prep) scored 10 seconds into the second half for Gettysburg. The Bullets were unable to gain more momentum as Salisbury keeper Brandon Warren stepped up for a pair of saves in the next five minutes and the Sea Gull offense dialed in with another scoring run. The margin grew to 10 (14-4) on a goal by Josh Melton with 5:44 left in the third quarter.
Salisbury maintained its 10-goal lead into the fourth quarter before the Bullets tallied four of the final five goals.
The Sea Gulls led in shots (37-31) and ground balls (41-30), while Gettysburg held a slight edge in face-offs 16-14.
Freshman
Connor Hume (Elkridge, Md./Loyola Blakefield) led Gettysburg with three goals, while Kolen and Harvey each finished with two. Junior defenseman
Mitch Wykoff (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Ludlowe) totaled one goal, six ground balls, and two caused turnovers.
Gwin and Zach Pompea each scored four goals for Salisbury, while Snyder posted three goals and three assists. Kevin Murphy came up with four caused turnovers and Brett Malamphy finished 14-of-24 on face-offs with nine ground balls.
Gettysburg returns home to face Stevenson University next Saturday, March 2, at 1 p.m.
