• The Short Story: With less than a second on the clock and the game tied at 63,
Rory Cole took the inbounds pass from
Jess Sweeney and watched her shot go through the nylon to give the Johns Hopkins women's basketball team a thrilling 66-63 victory over Dickinson on the road on Tuesday night.
How it Happened
• The Blue Jays got out to a hot start to open the game, building a 10-point lead at 3:30 on a layup by
Lyndsey Hoyd which made the score 16-6. The Red Devils cut the lead in half with a three from Jennifer Kremp at 1:42 to make it a 16-11 game, however, Cole converted two free throws to make it a seven-point game. Dickinson then ended the quarter on a 4-2 run to make the score 20-15 after the first.
• Cole and
Lexie Scholtz got the scoring going for JHU in the second as their back-to-back layups made the score 24-15. The Red Devils followed with a 10-0 run to tie the game at 24 at 6:48 and two free throws by Halle Maeda at 5:17 gave Dickinson its first lead of the game at 28-26.
Lillian Scott sparked a 9-0 run capped by a layup from
Erin Walsh to put Hopkins back on top, 35-28 with 2:23 left in the half and the Blue Jays would head into the half with a 37-30 lead.
• After a layup by Claudia Maria to open the third cut the JHU lead to 37-32, a three from
Madison McGrath sparked a 5-0 run to put the Blue Jays back up by 10 at 42-32 but an 11-0 Dickinson run, capped by a three from Emily Padalino, put the Red Devils in the lead, 43-42 with 1:29 remaining in the quarter and Dickinson went on to finish the quarter with a 47-45 lead.
• The Blue Jays regained the lead early in the fourth on a Scholtz three followed by a Scott layup off a Dickinson turnover to take a 50-47 lead at 9:25. A free throw from Scott at 5:26 put Hopkins up 56-51, but Dickinson came back once again as the Red Devils scored the next five points to tie the game at 56 with 4:31 remaining.
• The teams went back-and-forth in the game's remaining minutes and a three from Maeda gave Dickinson a 63-61 lead with 1:15 left. Cole then stole the ball from Kremp and Scott then went the length of the floor for the layup to tie the game at 63 with 30 seconds remaining. Maeda had a chance to win the game for the Red Devils but her shot missed and gave the Blue Jays the chance to win the game. With just under a second left on the clock, Sweeney sent the inbounds pass to Cole who sent up the shot as time expired to give Johns Hopkins the 66-63 victory.
