GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Junior
Paul Triandafilou (Derwood, Md./Georgetown Prep) secured Gettysburg College's lone victory with a decision at heavyweight as part of a 38-3 setback at the hands of fifth-ranked Messiah College Friday night inside Bream Gym.
Messiah (3-2) built its lead with four close victories. Sean Redington topped senior
Lenny Ogozalek (Summit Hill, Pa./Panther Valley) for the first time in three tries this season 10-4 at 125 and seventh-ranked Hunter Harris managed six quick points in the final minute to take down senior
Louie Carusillo (Pequannock, N.J./DePaul Catholic) 14-6.
At 141, freshman
Sean Thompson (Plainsboro, N.J./West Windsor-Plainsboro South) and Nick Nunez each scored four points in the second period and finished regulation tied. Nunez managed a takedown early in the sudden victory period for a 6-4 win. A takedown and near-fall gave Stephen Maloney enough of a cushion to survive sophomore
Colin Devlin (Dresher, Pa./Upper Dublin) 4-2 at 149 pounds.
After a pin at 157 pounds, the match of the night took place between seventh-ranked Jeff Hojnacki and fifth-ranked
Colin Kowalski (Derwood, Md./Georgetown) at 165. Kowalski had won each of the previous two meetings, including a decision in the finals of the Petrofes Invitational last weekend.
With the scored tied 4-4 in the second period, Kowalski managed a takedown to jump back in front. Hojnacki escaped to slice the deficit to 6-5 heading into the final frame. The Gettysburg sophomore opened the third period in the top position and deftly defended most of the Falcon grappler's escape attempts. With less than a minute left, however, Hojnacki managed to slip Kowalski's grasp for a reversal and held on for a 7-6 victory.
Messiah added to the advantage with a pair of technical falls by top-ranked Ben Swarr and fourth-ranked Kyle Koser at 174 and 197, respectively, sandwiched around a forfeit by the Bullets at 184.
For the second consecutive season, Triandafilou prevented the shutout with a strong showing at heavyweight. He scored two takedowns and an escape in the first two periods and racked up several minutes of riding time as part of a 6-2 decision over Jared Schell. Triandafilou, ranked sixth by D3wrestle.com, improved to 15-2 this season.
Gettysburg returns to action at the Waynesburg University Invitational on Jan. 6.
