Men's Soccer Battles Mules To Draw

ALLENTOWN, Pa.—A goal from Swarthmore's Quentin Millette in the 63rd minute equalized Saturday night's Centennial Conference matchup between the Garnet men's soccer team and the Muhlenberg College Mules. The tie would go unresolved, however, as the teams remained knotted at 2-2 through the first overtime after which a lightning delay suspended the match in a draw.

With the tie, both teams are now the owners of identical 6-1-2 records overall and 0-1-1 records in Centennial play.

The Garnet earned a spot on the scoreboard in the 14th minute. Swarthmore pressured early, hitting the post in the 10th minute and then proceeding to take three corner kicks in a row and having a shot headed off the goal line by a defender. Muhlenberg committed a blatant takedown in the box while attempting to defend that third corner, and thus created a penalty kick opportunity for senior Trevor Homstad. Homstad drilled the shot into the back left corner of the net for his fourth goal of the season.

The Mules evened the game in the 36th minute on a PK of their own and then took the lead in the 56th minute.

Homstad picked up another point in the 63rd minute by driving a free kick into the box and locating a leaping Millette who headed in his first goal of the season.

Swarthmore put two more shots on goal in the remainder of regulation but couldn't break the tie.

Garnet freshman goalkeeper Max Kral got the start for the second game in a row. He finished with seven saves in 100 minutes, including a stop in the 87th minute that helped send the game into overtime.

With lightning crackling after the end of the first half of overtime, match play was suspended and the game designated a draw.

Swarthmore moves on to face Ursinus College on Wednesday in Collegeville at 7:30 p.m.
