ALLENTOWN, Pa.--Swarthmore College won its fifth straight Centennial Conference game on Tuesday in a 12-2 trouncing of Muhlenberg College, and junior Charlie Levitt broke the program's single-season home run record.
The Garnet are 19-6 overall this season and are tied for first place in the conference with only Johns Hopkins University at 6-1.
Swarthmore's average margin of victory during the win streak is 9.2.
Junior
Jackson Roberts started the day's worth of scoring for the Garnet with an RBI single to left field in the top of the first. He played a large part in the win, going 3-for-4 with four RBIs, a run scored and a triple. His team-leading batting average is up to .390 on the season.
The big blow came off the bat of junior
Charles Levitt in the bottom of the third. He drove in two runs with his conference-leading seventh home run of the season and broke the school record with 12 games remaining on the schedule. His 10 career home runs are tied for second in Garnet history with Nicko Burnett '14 and trail only Michael Cameron '12, who had 13.
Junior Connor Elliott joined the scoring parade with a double in the fourth that scored sophomore
Jared Gillen and gave Swarthmore a 4-1 lead.
The Garnet plated two more in the fifth on a Roberts sacrifice fly and a single by sophomore
Cole Beeker.
Levitt continued his power surge in the sixth, doubling to score two runners and put Swarthmore up 8-1. He went 3-for-5 with four RBIs and two runs scored.
In the leadoff spot, sophomore
AJ Liu singled three times in five at bats, walked once, stole two bases and scored three runs.
Freshman
Sam Jacobson, who's started at catcher in every game during the win streak, went 2-for-3 with a double, a walk, an RBI and two runs scored. Jacobson is 6-for-15 with five walks, five RBIs and nine runs scored over the five wins.
On the mound, junior
Charles Groppe picked up his third win and remains undefeated this season with a 2.33 ERA. In seven innings, he struck out six, walked none and allowed two runs and four hits.
Sophomore
Jack Corkery came on to pitch a scoreless ninth inning with two strikeouts. The closer hasn't allowed a run or a hit in six straight appearances.
The Garnet will go for six straight wins on Friday as they welcome the Mules (10-14, 3-4) to Clothier Field at 3:30 p.m.
