LANCASTER, Pa. – Senior
Aileen Reilly (Huntington Station, N.Y./St. Anthony's) pitched a four-hit shutout in the opening game and then picked up the save in the nightcap as Gettysburg College secured the top spot in the Centennial Conference Championship with a sweep of Franklin & Marshall College Tuesday night.
Gettysburg (17-13, 12-2 CC) moved two full games in front of idle McDaniel College (19-16-1, 10-4 CC) in the conference standings with two games left. The Bullets own the tiebreaker over the Green Terror by virtue of a sweep on April 5. The last time the Orange and Blue hosted the CC Championship was in 2005.
Gettysburg won the opening game at Franklin & Marshall (17-17, 8-6 CC) 5-0 behind Reilly, who tossed her fourth shutout in six career starts against the Diplomats. The Bullets scored the final five runs for a 6-3 win in game two.
The visitors jumped out to an early lead in the top of the first inning of the opener. After sophomore
Taylor Doi (Foster City, Calif./San Mateo) hit a double down the left field line, freshman
Shelby Baker (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington) hit a ball that was misplayed by the shortstop and allowed Doi to scamper home. Junior
Meredith Taylor (Hamilton, N.J./Northern Burlington) then parked her second homer of the spring over the left-field fence for a 3-0 advantage.
That was more than enough support for Reilly, who allowed only two runners to reach scoring position through the first five innings. The Diplomats put runners on first and second with one out in the sixth, but a double play started at third base put an end to the threat.
Gettysburg's remaining runs come across on another long-ball, this time off the bat of sophomore
Sarahrose Jonik (Glenmoore, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) in the second inning.
Reilly improved to 6-1 in Centennial play this season after allowing just four hits with two walks and six strikeouts. Jonik, Doi, and Taylor all went 2-for-4 in the opener.
The Bullets took the lead to start the nightcap as well. Sophomore
Rachel Julie (Elmsford, N.Y./Briarcliff) connected on the first of her career-high four hits to lead off the second inning and came in to score on a bases-loaded walk to freshman
Madison Cannatelli (East Wenatchee, Wash./Chaparral).
Franklin & Marshall's starting pitcher Katie Wenger helped her own cause with a two-run homer in the bottom of the second to gain a 2-1 lead. The Diplomats made it a 3-1 advantage on a run-scoring single by Sammy Burns in the next inning.
With two outs in the fifth, the Bullets rallied for three runs. A triple by Julie was followed up by consecutive singles by sophomore
Liz Cowell (Verona, N.J./Mount Saint Dominic), junior
Sophia Blasius (Ramsey, N.J./Ramsey), and senior
Stephanie Leonardo (East Haddam, Conn./Choate Rosemary Hall). Each base knock went up the middle of the diamond with Cowell bringing home Julie and Leonardo bringing in the final two runs to push the Bullets back in front 4-3.
Four consecutive singles capped by Julie's fourth hit of the afternoon produced one run in the sixth. Cowell capped the scoring with a sacrifice fly to right field in the frame.
Sophomore
McKenzie Somers (Littlestown, Pa./Littlestown) and Reilly combined to shut out the Diplomats over the final 4.1 innings. Somers earned the win after giving up just two hits and striking out one in her 2.1 innings of work. Reilly threw two scoreless innings to earn her first save of the season. In 10 career appearances against Franklin & Marshall, Reilly has gone 5-1 with a 1.33 ERA and 42 strikeouts in 47.2 innings.
Every Gettysburg player that recorded an at bat produced a hit in game two. Julie went 4-for-4 with two runs and one RBI. Cowell and Blasius each went 2-for-3 with the former driving home two runs.
Gettysburg closes out the conference's regular season with a doubleheader at Muhlenberg College (12-20, 4-8 CC) on Saturday at noon.
