SWARTHMORE, Pa. – Senior
Brad DeMartino (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) spun a four-hit complete game in the opener and the Gettysburg College baseball team came away with a split at Centennial Conference-leading Swarthmore on Saturday.
Â
The Bullets (10-20, 4-10) earned a 3-1 win in the first game before the Garnet (24-9, 11-3 CC) claimed a 14-1 victory in the nightcap.
Â
Gettysburg spotted DeMartino an early 1-0 lead with a run in the first. Freshman
Harry Quimby (Wilmington, Del./Tower Hill) led off the game with a walk before scoring on a two-out single by sophomore
Ryan LaCoe (Hershey, Pa./Hershey).
Â
In the meantime, DeMartino (2-4) was in control from the start and no-hit Swarthmore through the first five innings. He retired nine straight batters before AJ Liu singled leading off the sixth. The Garnet tied the game at 1-1 when Cole Beeker singled home Liu.
Â
Gettysburg reclaimed the lead with an unearned run in the seventh, when senior
Logan Sneed (Newtown, Pa./Germantown Academy) roped a two-out, RBI-single. After setting down five in a row, DeMartino worked out of a major jam in the eighth, inducing a 1-2-3 inning-ending double play with the bases loaded.
Â
The Bullets tacked on an insurance run in the ninth, when freshman
Sean Murphy (Westfield, Mass./Westfield) drew a bases-loaded walk. DeMartino would close the game on a high note, working a three-up, three-down ninth while striking out the first and last batters of the inning. For the game, he fanned six and walked just one while tossing his seventh career complete game.
Â
Sneed, senior
Chuck Probst (North Bend, Pa./Bucktail), and LaCoe all collected two hits in the opener.
Â
Swarthmore starter Owen Webb absorbed the loss despite allowing just two runs (one earned) over 6 1/3 innings.
Â
In the second game, junior
Jonny Bray (Fairfax, Va./Robinson) made his first career start on the mound for Gettysburg. The Garnet scored three runs over the first three innings, but the Bullets made it a 3-1 game in the top of the fourth, when Probst doubled before scoring on a sacrifice fly from freshman
Patrick McDermott (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Radnor).
Â
The Garnet answered with a run in the bottom of the inning, then blew it open with 10 runs over the fifth and sixth innings.
Â
Bray (1-1) pitched four innings and was charged with six runs. Four additional Bullets threw the final four innings, including freshman
Sam Blanchard (Chatham, N.J./Chatham), who worked 1 1/3 scoreless innings, and junior
Brendan Wright (Bayville, N.Y./Locust Valley), who fired a scoreless eighth.
Â
Ricky Conti (7-2) pitched seven innings to earn the win for Swarthmore.
Â
Gettysburg returns to the diamond on Tuesday, when it visits McDaniel at 3:30 p.m. in another Centennial Conference affair.
