Gettysburg Grapplers Sink Elizabethtown

Bullets claim four of five final bouts in 24-16 victory

Dan Ebert '19 scored a 9-4 decision to give Gettysburg the lead at Elizabethtown.
ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. – The Gettysburg College wrestling team won four of the final five matches to secure a 24-16 victory in a non-conference meeting with Elizabethtown College on Friday night.

Gettysburg (7-2) trailed 6-0 following close decision losses at 125 and 133. Freshman Anthony Alexandrou (Armonk, N.Y./Byram Hills) put the Bullets on the board with an 8-5 win at 141 pounds, while classmate Traken Sutton (Wethersfield, Conn./Loomis Chaffee) forced a tie in the team score with an 8-2 win at 149 pounds.

Elizabethtown (2-10) scored a pin at 157 to regain the lead, but junior Quinn Merrigan (Canton, Mass./Canton) came right back with a quick fall to start the second period at 165 pounds.

Sophomore Dan Ebert (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Warde) handed Gettysburg its first lead by scoring eight points in the first period on the way to a 9-4 decision at 174. The Blue Jays took the lead temporarily with a major decision at 184, but a forfeit to senior Camden Stoops (East Prospect, Pa./Eastern York) put the Bullets in control for good.

Sophomore Paul Triandafilou (Derwood, Md./Georgetown Prep), ranked fifth in the country by the National Wrestling Coaches Association, maintained his perfect record in overtime matches (12-0) with a takedown to start the extra time period against Eric Eckstein. Triandafilou won 3-1 and improved to 13-0 this season.

Additionally, freshman Josh Newman (Massapequa, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) logged his fourth pin of the season in an exhibition match at 141 pounds.

Gettysburg returns to action tomorrow with a pair of Centennial Conference match ups against United States Merchant Marine Academy and host Stevens Institute of Technology beginning at noon.
