SWARTHMORE, Pa.--Swarthmore College Baseball clinched a spot in the Centennial Conference playoffs after beating Haverford for the second time in four days on Friday. It's the first time since 2010 the Garnet will appear in the postseason.
The Garnet (26-9 overall, 13-3 conference) beat the Fords (16-18, 9-7) by a score of 15-7.
Swarthmore found itself down 4-0 after the top of the second inning. But in the bottom of the inning, senior
Matt Palmer drove in sophomore
Jared Gillen, and freshman
Coleson Hebble scored on heads-up base running.
In the third inning, the Garnet scored eight runs and took a lead that it never gave up. In the inning, nine straight Swarthmore batters reached base.
The scoring in the third started with junior
Cole Beeker's fourth home run of the season. This one bounced off of the right fielder's glove and over the fence for three runs. Hebble, Palmer and sophomore
AJ Liu also had RBIs.
Seniors
Jackson Ramey and
Max Kassan as well as junior
Zach Gonzalez combined to pitch five scoreless innings in relief. Kassan was awarded with the win, bringing his record to 2-0 on the season.
Junior Charlie Levitt joined the run-scoring parade in the sixth, striking a double high off of the center field wall to score Liu. Junior
Jackson Roberts also contributed, doubling to drive in Beeker. In the seventh, Liu hit his second triple of the game to record his third RBI.
Beeker finished with four RBIs. Both Liu and Palmer had three hits and three RBIs.
Swarthmore plays the last of its conference regular-season games on Saturday at McDaniel College. It's a doubleheader in Westminster, Md., beginning at 12:30 p.m. With two wins, the Garnet will lock up the No. 1 seed in the conference playoffs and host the tournament.
