Field Hockey Drops 1-0 Decision to Muhlenberg

GETTYSBURG, Pa.The Gettysburg College field hockey team dropped a 1-0 decision to Muhlenberg College in a Centennial Conference match up at Shirk Field at Musselman Stadium Saturday afternoon.

Gettysburg (6-7, 3-4 CC) lost by a goal for the third time in four matches and slipped half a game behind Washington College (4-10, 4-4 CC) for the fifth and final conference playoff spot. Muhlenberg (5-7, 5-2 CC) took over possession of fourth place in the league standings with the victory.

Junior Jillian Caputo (Haddon Township, N.J./Haddon Township) denied the visitor's first scoring attempt 3:27 into the contest and the Bullets came right back down the field with a flurry of offensive activity. Gettysburg put four shots on goal in a four-minute span with two saved by Mule goalie Jordan Segrave and two attempts by sophomore Emma Bertrando (West Chester, Pa./Henderson) stopped at the line by defenders.

Despite another Caputo save late in the first half, Muhlenberg maintained the offensive pressure and followed up with the game's first goal. Stephi Rydgren took a pass from Megan Webber and found an opening through the defense to place the ball in the left corner in the 34th minute.

Caputo stopped the only attempt she saw on goal in the second half at 39:13. Gettysburg's defense clamped down and allowed only two more shot attempts for the remainder of the game. The offense came up short on the other side of the field as freshman Lauren Beccaria's (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Ludlowe) shot with 40 seconds left was denied by Segrave.

Gettysburg led in shots (11-9) and penalty corners (7-6). Caputo and Segrave each finished with three saves.

The Bullets close out their home schedule against Swarthmore College next Friday, Oct. 19, at 3:30 p.m.
