Behind eight goals from freshmen, the Muhlenberg men's lacrosse team opened its 2018 season with a resounding 15-3 home win against Immaculata.
The victory is the first for the Mules in a season opener since 2012, and the 15 goals are the most scored by the Mules in their first game since 2007. The last time they won an opener by at least 12 goals was 2004.
Freshman
PJ Lombara led the scoring with four goals – on four shots – in the first game of his career. Sophomores
Scott Fayan and
Bobby McLoughlin and freshman
Ethan Grossman netted a pair of goals apiece.
Muhlenberg rolled up a 52-19 advantage in shots and blew open a 3-1 game by scoring five second-quarter goals, capped by a pair of scores 16 seconds apart by McLoughlin and Grossman. Fayan and senior
Joey Hess (pictured above) also scored in the period.
With the Mules ahead 10-2 after three, Lombara provided the icing on the cake by scoring four times in the fourth quarter, including a natural hat trick in a span of just 90 seconds. Included in the run was a highlight-reel behind the back shot of a pass from sophomore
Jack Colt, who recorded three assists in the game.
Sophomore
Garrett Pope played the first three quarters in goal and made five saves.
Sophomores
Frankie Feaster and
Paul Krueger combined to win 13 of 20 faceoffs, with Feaster also scoring Muhlenberg's first goal of the season.
In addition to Lombara and Grossman, freshmen
Nate Emrick and
Thomas Murphy also scored goals. Another frosh,
Alexander Giaquinto, recorded an assist.
Senior
