Thompson's Pair Lifts Johns Hopkins to 4-0 Win at Swarthmore

Blue Jays Clinch Playoff Berth

The Basics
• Score: #17 Johns Hopkins-4, Swarthmore-0
• Records: JHU (12-1, 7-0 CC) • SC (5-8, 1-6 CC)
• Location: Swarthmore, PA • Clothier Field
• The Short Story: Freshman Izzy Thompson scored a goal in each half to lead the 17th-ranked Johns Hopkins field hockey team to a 4-0 win at Swarthmore Saturday afternoon.

How it Happened
• Freshman Abby Birk needed just 1:47 to get the Blue Jays on the board as they took advantage of their first corner of the game. Freshman Sarah Matyas fired a shot off the corner that was saved by Zelda Bank. Birk was right there however to poke the rebound home.
• After a flurry of shots by Swarthmore on the other end, Hopkins picked up its second goal of the afternoon. Junior Katie McErlean's initial shot was blocked by a Garnet defender, but Thompson buried the rebound to make it 2-0 Hopkins at 18:23.
• The Garnet had another burst of shots off a penalty corner but once again it was the Blue Jays that were able to capitalize. McErlean dribbled in and blasted a low shot past Banks and into the corner to push the lead to three with 28 seconds left in the half.
• Thompson capped the scoring at the 47:18-mark with her second of the afternoon to make it a four-goal game. Banks made a save on freshman Maddie Brown-Scherer, but the ball ricocheted right to Thompson, who batted it past Banks for the score.

What it Means
• Hopkins improves to 20-7 all-time against Swarthmore and has now won seven straight in the series. JHU has shutout Swarthmore in each of the last three meetings and has allowed just one goal in the last five.
• The Blue Jays push their win streak to eight, their longest since 2008 (11 games). Hopkins' 12-1 start is also the best since that same 2008 team was 12-1 through the first 13 games. In addition, it is just the second 12-1 start in program history.
• Hopkins sits atop the Centennial Conference standings with three games left. With today's win, the Blue Jays clinch a berth in the Centennial Conference Tournament.

Inside the Box Score
• Thompson's two-goal outing is her second straight and pushes her season total to a team-best 10. Her 10 goals are one shy of the program record for goals by a freshman (Beth Cariello, 1990).
• Junior Jodie Baris finished with seven saves in earning her sixth shutout of the season. She is now tied for 10th in school history with 10 career shutouts. Bank finished with nine saves in the loss for the Garnet.
• Shots were even at 16 apiece, with the Garnet having a 12-11 advantage in corners.

Up Next
• Hopkins has a quick turnaround as the Blue Jays host the 10th-ranked Christopher Newport Captains on Monday, October 15. The non-conference contest is scheduled for a 4:30 pm start at Homewood Field.
