The Muhlenberg track and field teams opened their outdoor season at Lafayette's 7-Way Meet and made history in one way.
Junior
Julia Leep-Lazar became the first member of the Mule women's team to throw the hammer in competition. The hammer was added as a Centennial Conference championship event for the 2017 season, and although several Muhlenberg men have competed in the hammer throw, no female had.
Leep-Lazar
(pictured above right) touched the hammer down at 75 feet on her first throw, establishing the school record.
Two other women's throwers on the women's team had noteworthy performances in their first time competing in 10 months, with senior
Michelle Gaykowski and junior
Jess Voltaggio finishing 1-2 in the discus. Gaykowski's ECAC-qualifying heave of 135-6 was just a foot short of the school record she set two years ago, and Voltaggio came within eight inches of her personal best.
Junior
Jamie Pacilio was the other Mule to win an event, coming in first in the 1500 meters and landing in seventh place on the all-time performance list. Junior
Emily Davidson came in second in the same event, knocking three seconds off her personal best.
Freshman
Rashida Haye entered the Muhlenberg performance list in seventh place in the 400-meter hurdles, finishing fifth. She also came in sixth in the 100 hurdles.
The men were paced by junior
Michael Havkins, who came in second in the discus with a personal-best, ECAC-qualifying throw of 145-6. He easily beat his previous best of 141-9, entering the performance list in 10th place.
The Mule men also produced a quartet of fourth-place finishes: junior
Anthony Ware in the 100, sophomore
Mike Bessette (pictured above left) in the 400, sophomore
Erik Berger in the discus and freshman
Cameron Ford in the triple jump.
