Golden Tornadoes Narrowly Escape Garnet

SWARTHMORE, Pa.–The Swarthmore College women's basketball team (0-2) could not overcome the three-point shooting of the visiting Geneva College Golden Tornadoes (1-1) and fell, 83-87, in the opening game of the Tip-Off Classic on Friday, Nov. 18.

Swarthmore forced 30 total turnovers and scored 29 points in the fourth quarter as it fought to the final buzzer.

Sophomore Kayla Sembly led four scorers in double figures with 18 points as Lindsay O'Sullivan added 16, Melanie Ackerman chipped in 14 and Abigail Pirron finished with 13. Guard Elizabeth Stiles swiped four steals and handed out nine assists and O'Sullivan completed a double-double with 11 rebounds, including seven on the offensive glass.

The Golden Tornadoes led early behind a barrage of three-pointers. Geneva made 10 of its 12 treys in the first half and led by as many as 17 midway through the second quarter. The Garnet trimmed their deficit to 11 heading into half on a Stiles layup with 13 seconds remaining.

Both sides cooled down a bit in the third quarter as defensive pressure intensified. In the final frame, the Garnet narrowed their deficit with back-to-back fastbreak layups off of steals, forcing a Geneva timeout.

The Golden Tornadoes were able to regain a double-digit advantage, but seven unanswered points, including six from Pirron, closed the gap. Swarthmore came within one possession after Sembly drained a trey with 22 seconds remaining and were within two after she converted a pair from the line, but the clutch free throw shooting of Marissa Heaney won the day for the visitors.

Swarthmore wraps up the weekend with a 3 p.m. home game against Cabrini on Saturday, Nov. 19.
