SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Gettysburg College men's cross country team opened its 2017 season at the Shippensburg University Galen Piper Challenge Friday evening.
The Bullets posted a team score of 144 to finish fifth among seven teams, beating out York (170) and Frostburg State (207). Dickinson won with a score of 33 while Shippensburg, a Division II school, and Ship Alumi tied for second with 49 points. Elizabethtown (107) came in fourth.
The race marked the fourth year in a row that Gettysburg opened the season with a night meet. The Bullets also started the season under the lights at Ship in 2014 and 2016 and opened with a night meet at Dickinson in 2015.
Junior
Alex Petrecca (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Warde) led the way for the Bullets, which had just a 53-second split from its first through fifth runners. Petrecca cruised the 6,000-meter course in 20:03, placing 15th among 108 competitors, while sophomore
Sam Sheldon (Tully, N.Y./Tully) was next across the finish line for Gettysburg, taking 23rd in 20:19.
Completing the team scoring for the Bullets were junior
Matt Robinson (Taneytown, Md./Pinkerton Academy [N.H.]), who placed 36th in 20:46, junior
Mike Miller (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley), who took 47th in 20:54, and freshman
Connor Berson (Clinton, N.J./North Hunterdon), who was 48th in 20:56.
Finishing as displacers were freshmen
Dylan McKeever (Furlong, Pa./Central Buck East), who came in 49th in 20:59, and
Owen Crosby (Wilmington, Del./Newark Charter), who was 51st in 21:04.
Matt Gillette of Ship Alumni won in 18:40 while Dickinson's Bryce Descavish (19:22) was the top collegiate finisher.
The Bullets return to action on Friday, when they take on Dickinson and Franklin & Marshall at the 37th annual Little Three Meet, hosted by Dickinson.
