Wrestling Ends CC Dual Season with Win

The Muhlenberg wrestling team finished the regular season with its first Centennial Conference dual match victory of the year, beating McDaniel 29-19.

The Mules (10-11, 1-6 CC) won four straight matches after trailing 13-9 through the first five bouts, with sophomores Jimmy Fratantoni and Gennaro Cerminara each earning pins, freshman Steven Rice defeating his opponent by technical fall and junior Jake Gordon winning by decision.

Muhlenberg also faced Gettysburg, dropping that match 31-12 despite two matches being decided by one point. Three wrestlers ended the day with two victories. Rice and Cerminara joined freshman Josh Hickey in earning wins in both their matches.

Wrestling at 149, Hickey (pictured above) in his Gettysburg match scored three first-period takedowns and two near-falls in going up 12-1. He took down his opponent again to start the second period and earned a four-point near-fall to earn the technical fall victory. In his second match against McDaniel, Hickey scored three takedowns, a four-second near-fall and a reversal to build up a lead and with the riding time point earned a 14-7 decision.

Rice held his Gettysburg opponent scoreless until allowing two third-period escapes in a 12-2 major decision. Against McDaniel, Rice jumped out to a commanding 14-0 advantage before allowing an escape. He then quickly took down his opponent again to capture a technical fall victory.

Cerminara in his Gettysburg match escaped an early takedown and brought his opponent down to take a 3-2 lead. Another escape and takedown in the second period made it 6-2 Cerminara, and the sophomore added a third escape and takedown to win his match 10-5. Cerminara pinned his McDaniel opponent with only :36 seconds left in the third period, his 10th pin at 197 this season.

Fratantoni made quick work of his McDaniel opponent in earning his fourth pin this season, and freshman Austin Sherman also pinned his McDaniel opponent at 133. Sherman scored a takedown in the first and second periods before ending the match almost a minute into the second period with his first dual-meet pin of the season and third overall.

In his McDaniel match, Gordon took a 3-1 lead heading into the third period and was able to score a takedown and earned the riding advantage point to win 6-2.

In his only match of the day at heavyweight, freshman Scott Schaeffer battled against a Gettysburg opponent ranked fifth in his weight class. Schaeffer kept the match close at 3-1 through two periods before getting pinned a minute into the third period.

Freshmen Quentin Bernhard and Michael Dougan each fell by only one point in their Gettysburg bouts. Bernhard was taken down but pulled off a late reversal to tie his match at 2 through one period. Bernhard however could not score again and his opponent captured the riding time advantage point to win 3-2.

Dougan escaped three takedowns in the first period and again escaped from the down position to start the second before scoring a takedown of his own to take a 7-6 lead. His Gettysburg opponent however escaped to tie the match and escaped from being the down man to start the third period. A fourth takedown put Dougan's opponent up 10-7, and a late escape and penalty point were not enough.

The Mules conclude the dual-meet portion of their season and prepare for the Centennial Conference championships next Saturday hosted at Stevens.
