DUBUQUE, Iowa (January 10, 2019)  – Junior
Troy Stanich and sophomore
Brett Kaliner each earned victories in their respective weight classes, but the Stevens Institute of Technology wrestling team fell to No. 8 Loras College 36-7 Thursday evening in a non-conference dual at the Loras Athletic & Wellness Center.
Stanich, the nation's top-ranked wrestler at 141 pounds by both the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) and D3Wrestle.com, earned his 22nd victory of the year with a 7-4 decision over nationally-ranked Clint Lembeck. Loras' 141-pounder is ranked sixth by the NWCA and seventh by D3Wrestle.com. Stanich's victory opened Stevens' match scoring after Loras jumped out to a seven-point lead after the first two bouts with a major at 125 and a hard-fought 9-6 decision victory by #8/#7 Brice Everson over senior
Joey Borai at 133.
Kaliner, ranked sixth by the NWCA and fifth by D3Wrestle.com, evened the match score at seven with a 14-3 major decision over Kevin Kelly. The victory was the West Chester, Pennsylvania native's 19th of the season and second major. Kaliner leads the team with nine pins.
"We make this trip to compete against the top programs in country," said head assistant wrestling coach
Anthony Bonaventura. "We came up short in the dual, but are just a few positions away from changing the result. The team is looking forward to getting back on the mats on Saturday and competing at a high level."
With the match knotted at seven, junior
Dylan Van Sickell stepped to the mats against nationally-ranked Brandon Murray, but dropped a spirited 5-2 decision. Murray is ranked seventh by the NWCA and fifth by D3Wrestle.com. The decision victory put the hosting Duhawks back in front by three at 10-7. Loras would go on to extend its advantage with bonus-point victories in each of the final five bouts to claim the dual victory.
The setback dropped Stevens' dual record to 6-7, while the Duhawks improved to 6-1.Â
Also of note, freshman
Anthony Lanza made his collegiate debut, but came up on the short end of his match with Loras' Eddie Smith at 165.
