Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Jays put clamps on Dickinson to win fourth straight

CARLISLE, Pa. — For the fourth time this season, the Elizabethtown College women's basketball team kept its opponent at 40 points or less. The Blue Jays turned in their best defensive performance of the season to date in holding Dickinson to 34 points Tuesday night, the fewest E-town has given up in 17 games. The Jays cruised to a 59-34 non-conference victory and extended the winning streak to four.

The Elizabethtown (13-4) defense set the tone early, forcing Dickinson (4-13) into four turnovers in its first six possessions. After the Red Devils coughed up the ball the first two times down the court, Taylor Alwine converted on the other end with a jumper and layup on consecutive shots. Emily Martin then alternated baskets with Alwine to put E-town up 10-0. Krissy Pennell's steal and fast-break layup made it 12-0, forcing Dickinson into a timeout with 16:45 on the clock.

The Red Devils didn't hit their first field goal until the 13:47 mark when Kassidy Lesher's basket down low was good.

After starting the game 7-for-10 from the floor, the Blue Jays went through a brief slump, allowing Dickinson to climb back into the contest. Helen Roberts' three made it 15-10 as the Red Devils outscored EC 8-3 over a two minute stretch.

Martin knocked home a jumper off an out-of-bounds play from Emma Hoesman to increase the Elizabethtown lead to 19-10. Then, Rachel Forjan scored the next seven points for the Blue Jays; two from the foul line, two on a bucket in the paint, and a three pointer. At the end of her seven-point spree, the lead was at its largest of the game, 26-12.

Once just a five point lead, E-town outscored Dickinson 21-7 over the final 12:26, capped off by Morgan Thomas' and-one with a second left before the half. Nine different players had at least a point for the Jays in the opening half. Alwine put in eight, Forjan had seven, and Martin ended the first 20 minutes with six.

The Elizabethtown defense continued to impose its will in the second half as Dickinson made just one of its first 15 shots. E-town held the Red Devils to just ten made field goals (40 attempts) and 25 percent shooting, the fifth time the Blue Jays have held the opposing offense below 30 percent.

Alwine finished with a team-high 11 points. Martin (seven points) and Alyssa Aichele (six points) each had five rebounds. Hoesman and Sabrina Hackendorn both had four points off the bench to lead the reserves. 15 different players registered at least a point.

The Blue Jays dominated the stat sheet with 32 points in the paint, 21 second chance points, and 18 points off turnovers. They outrebounded Dickinson 53-30, and nearly had as many offensive rebounds (25) as total rebounds for the Red Devils. E-town led the entire game.

The women's basketball team faces another crucial Landmark Conference contest this Saturday, January 31, at nationally-ranked Scranton. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m.
