GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Sophomore
Emma Bertrando (West Chester, Pa./Henderson) scored the game-winning goal with no time left and junior
Jillian Caputo (Haddon Township, N.J./Haddon Township) made a career-high 14 saves to lift Gettysburg College past No. 17 Catholic University 2-1 in non-conference field hockey action at Shirk field at Musselman Stadium Wednesday afternoon.
Despite a second half largely controlled by the visitors, Gettysburg (1-1) out-lasted Catholic (0-2) in the sweltering heat to force a final penalty corner with no time left on the clock. Sophomore
Tamlin Unruh (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) controlled the lead pass at the top of the arc and slipped the ball to her classmate on the wing. With the ball on her left, Bertrando went low and found a hole through the defense just inside the near post for the game-winner before getting mobbed by her teammates.
The win marked the second consecutive year Gettysburg has knocked off a top-20 foe on its turf. The Bullets beat No. 15 Ursinus College 2-1 in double-overtime last season.
With temperatures approaching 90 degrees at game time, the Orange and Blue went on the offensive early with a series of shots at the Catholic goal. None found the mark, with Cardinal goalie Kim McGroary keeping the hosts at bay with a save at 7:31.
Catholic struck first in the 14th minute. Caputo stopped the initial strike by Katie Anderson, but Graceton Griffith was in the right place at the right time and slapped the rebound into the cage 13:36 into the game.
The Bullets reached the scoring column after drawing a penalty corner late in the first half. Sophomore
Grace Torrance's (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township) hard strike was redirected into the cage by classmate
Arden Scheetz (Phoenix, Md./Notre Dame Prep) to tie the contest at 31:05.
The Cardinals pressed the attack in the final period and out-shot the Bullets 12-3 in the half. None of those attempts hit the cage as Caputo recorded 10 saves. She stopped three shots in a 17-second span early in the period before denying four consecutive shots with just 15 minutes left in regulation.
With Caputo thwarting two more shots in the final six minutes, Gettysburg raced back up the field to force the final penalty corner before time expired.
Catholic finished with an 18-9 lead in shots, while Gettysburg led in penalty corners 10-4.
