Women's Basketball Wins Scotty Wood Title

A total team effort in all aspects of the game powered the Muhlenberg women's basketball squad to repeat as Scotty Wood Tournament champions, defeating Widener 75-38.

The Mules (2-1) captured their 13th Scotty Wood title and three players were named to the all-tournament team. Junior center Chelsea Gary earned tournament MVP by posting her second straight double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds, both team highs, while also blocking a team-high four shots.

For the tournament, Gary led the Mules with 39 points, 28 rebounds and seven blocks. The double-double was the fifth of her career.

Guards Sara Dilly and Emily O'Mahoney were also named to the all-tournament team. O'Mahoney hit three of her five triples in the game to score nine points while also making two steals.

Muhlenberg pressured the Pride (1-2) to 25.9 percent shooting and 27 turnovers in the game. Muhlenberg shot 36.8 percent from the floor and an even 50 percent (9 for 18) from behind the arc. The Mules also notched 18 assists and 16 steals as a team.

With the score tied at 5-5 in the first period, Muhlenberg went on an 11-0 run capped off by a three-pointer from freshman Emilie Benton, her first career points. Widener scored the next seven points to make it 16-12 after one quarter.

The Muhlenberg defense shut down Widener in the second period, holding the visitors to one field goal. A layup from Gary with 5:25 until halftime started a 20-0 Muhlenberg run to close the quarter and sent the teams to halftime with Muhlenberg up 41-15.

Widener would not get closer than within 20 points of Muhlenberg the rest of the way. The Mules played most of the second half with their reserve unit.

Preseason All-America guard Brandi Vallely saw her first action of the season and filled the stat sheet with four points, five rebounds, six assists and five steals.

Freshman guard JulieAnne Martin also chipped in nine points off the bench, while freshman forward Madison Kirchofer tallied five rebounds to go with four points and two blocks.

The 37-point win was Muhlenberg's largest margin of victory in a Scotty Wood title game since 2003's 104-67 triumph over Kean for the championship.
