GETTYSBURG, Pa. – On the strength of five victories, the Gettysburg College men's swimming team surged to a big lead on the opening night of the Gettysburg Invitational Friday evening.

The Bullets have piled up 404.5 points over the first seven events to build a substantial margin over Mary Washington (241.5), Franklin & Marshall (238), Susquehanna (204), and Dickinson (178).

Gettysburg won four of the five individual events and closed the night with a relay victory.

The Bullets opened with a runner-up finish in the 200-medley relay, as sophomore
Jeff Ragatz (Brookfield, Conn./Brookfield), freshman
Oliver Yancey (Wallingford, Pa./Strath Haven), junior
Francisco Nieves (Alexandria, Va./Edison), and senior
Ty Dougherty (West Chester, Pa./Salesianum School [Del.]) touched in 1:33.70. The Bullets trailed by over a second heading into the final leg before Dougherty clocked a 19.72-second split, and Gettysburg placed just 0.56 seconds behind Franklin & Marshall.

In the second event of the night, Ragatz came out on top with a convincing victory in the 200-backstroke, winning by over five seconds in 1:52.41. The Bullets followed up with a 1-2 finish in the 100-freestyle, with Dougherty touching first in 45.51 – just five-hundredths of a second shy of an NCAA "B-cut." Sophomore
Ogden Leyens (Fort Washington, Pa./Upper Dublin) was second in 46.19.

Freshmen
Jack Edelson (Charlotte, N.C./Providence Senior) and
Duncan Proxmire (McLean, Va./Langley) added one victory apiece. Edelson won by over a second in the 200-butterfly with a time (1:55.92) that was less than a second shy of the school record before Proxmire led from start to finish en route to an eight-second victory in the 1,650-freestyle (16:30.50).
 The evening ended with an exciting race in the 400-freestyle relay. Gettysburg went back and forth with Franklin & Marshall over the first three legs before Dougherty closed with a blistering 44.73-second split to give the Bullets the victory in 3:05.99. Daniel Petrillo (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan), Yancey, and junior
Parker Sorenson (Evergreen, Colo./home-schooled) also broke 3:10 (3:08.49). The Diplomats were third in 3:09.36.

Adam Dias (Wilmington, Del./Charter School of Wilmington) added a runner-up finish in the 200-breaststroke (2:07.29) while senior
Ian Schrock (State College, Pa./State College) was third in the 200-backstroke (1:57.84). Nieves contributed a fourth-place showing in the 100-freestyle, 47.57), as did sophomore
Josh Parker (Millington, N.J./Watchung Hills) in the 200-butterfly (1:57.20) and Yancey in the 200-breaststroke (2:10.76). In addition, junior
Jakob Hegna (Brielle, N.J./Manasquan) took fifth in the 200-backstroke (1:58.36).

The meet concludes on Saturday with a morning session at 10 a.m. and an evening session at 5 p.m.
